jerome mcdougle discussion

hey assholes.  these bullets aren't supposed to be taken for fact.  the point of this is to generate disscussion, not for you to nod your head in agreement and then go on to the next thread.  for fucks sake, discu

what we know:

  • dude's physically gifted.  he's big, strong, fast, and while it's nice to have some semblance of football skills, there is no substitute for raw tools.
  • dude has some semblance of football skills.  he might not have ever shown it over a full season, but he's a pretty natural defensive end.
  • the eagles traded up in the first round to get him.  with their drafting history, that's a pretty big endorsement.
  • he's 30 years old.
  • if he gets cut by the eagles, he will sign with the giants, and he will von oelhoffen mcnabb's knee.

what we want to know:

  • what role is he best suited to play on this team?  on passing downs, cole, clemons, and parker seem to have the inside track, but with clemons not being able to get on the field, and parker not being anything special, this might be the role he'd need to break in with.
  • will he get a fair chance to win playing time?  darren howard, juqua parker, chris clemons, victor abiamiri, and bryan smith aren't exactly all pro competition.  they're nice players, but none ever projected to have more potential than mcdougle, and if mcdougle can realize that potential, he should be the starter.

jp … I think you have to much invested in him and he is playing to well to let him go. lets look:
2003 – hurt is ankle knee and hip and missed half the season
2004 – irregular heartbeat diagnosed then a knee injury and he missed 5 games.
2005 – shot in the abdomen … took him all year probably more to recover
2006 – Broke some ribs in preseason played like crap regular season
2007 – injured in Preseason did not return

This guy hasn’t played a healthy season YET I can’t wait to see what he does for his sake I hope he can stay healthy.

I'd like to see...

him hit Eli a few more times… I hope Abiamiri comes back strong, but face it, we don’t know when that will be. We need another healthy DE on the roster and McDougle has looked good

since clemens is not playing tomorrow bwecause he is still injured . I think i would need a damn good explanation on why he was kept over mcdougle , when mcdougle has been playing his arse off and clemens, new to the system, hasn’t spent much time this camp even in practice

He has played a significant amount of time with the first and second teams

I doubt he is going anywhere, I think we keep all 6 DE, and cut Howard. Howard is currently playing 2nd team DT, but Klecko seems to have that spot in his hands. Also, think of the money you save by cutting howard.

Howard

Usually backs up Trent Cole but JJ took him out of position and moved him over behind JP. He got reps over there against the Pats and looked alright. He’s playing the Nickel DT position next to Mike Patterson as well. Darren Howard is a valuable player because he’s so versatile. Perhaps he doesn’t have the stats and he’s certainly not a starter, but he can come in and play all over the front 4.

Regarding the money, the Birds don’t need it and cutting Howard actually causes a fair amount of dead cap – something no team wants. At this point, I wonder if we shouldn’t try to trade Clemmons.

I agree, its not a money issue (only an added bonus)

You would only keep Howard as a DT, we really don’t need him at DE w/ Cole, Parker, Abiamiri, McDougle, Clemons, Smith.

I did see him play a ton of DT in practice, he was with the second team with Laws. But I think Klecko has shown a good rush up the gut. Right now just as a pure DT, I think that Klecko has a better rush, stronger motor, and is cheaper. You would only keep him as a swing guy DE/DT, but he we have no need for that with this overstocked DLine. Giants probrably claim him. Can we trade him for a late round pick just to control where he goes? I would take the last pick in the draft, as long as its out fo the NFC. Giants know we are cutting someone good, they aint stupid. Thats why they haven’t made any moves yet. They’ll just wait to Saturday.

Can't trade Clemons

I mean, imagine how the Eagles would come across to free-agents. This guy is a premier defender and one of the most significant signings of the off-season — if we go and trade him, that would INFURIATE the Players Association, and probably alienate a lot of FAs. Imagine that — it’s not likely you get a chance at FA as an NFL player, and if you do get a chance it’s not likely you’ll get more than one chance. Players want to go to a team that will pay them and that they want to play for — if we trade Clemons, all of a sudden a lot of teams are saying, “Why would I want to go to the Eagles if they’ll just trade me to some team I don’t want to play for two months after I sign?”

The Eagles would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did that. Every time you make a big investment contractually to a player, you tend to at least let them play out the year because anything less shows a team that does not have a consistent direction and considers contracts playthings.

idk man, i mean i’m definitly not for trading clemons but i doubt all that stuff that you said would happen would actually happen

by Remis on Aug 27, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

it would definitely be a strike against the team

but i agree that it wouldn’t be a catastrophic blow aganist their FA hopes.

i really don’t want to see clemons go, but i’d completely understand if it happened.

i'm not real worried about howard coming back to the nest and stomping on the bird,

but i think cutting either mcdougle or clemons could really haunt the team in a heads up matchup.

yup, I wouln't give up on Clemons just yet, he is what he is.

Hes a speed rusher, and he has shown that. Lets not forget that in the little time he played, he shared in a sack with Laws vs Pittsburgh. He just is not an everydown guy. He does get bullied a bit.

Injured

All the time.
from his bio on PE.com:

INJURY HISTORY:
Missed the 2006 season due to a torn left MCL he suffered during the preseason. Was placed on the Injured Reserve List on 12/27/05 after tearing his right MCL vs. NYG (12/24/05). Missed the first 10 games of 2004 with a pulled hamstring he suffered during the offseason. Spent 2003 on the Injured Reserve List with a torn labrum.
