Kevin Curtis out with sports hernia

15jets_slide2_medium

That dreaded sports hernia has struck again... this time it hit Kevin Curtis. Andy Reid announced today that Curtis will have surgery tomorrow and will be back this year, but there is no timetable. Andy Reid would only say he'd be out "for a while."  In all likelihood, we're probably looking at least 5-6 weeks before Curtis could maybe be back.

Looking at the schedule and projecting where he might come back, week 8 at home against Atlanta jumps out at me as a possible return date. It's after a bye and allows him an extra week or week two to heal. Either way, it's certain that we'll face tough games with Dallas, Pittsburgh, at Chicago, and Washington without the guy who was our best WR last year.

When you combine Curtis' injury with the nagging hamstring strain Reggie Brown has been sidelined with... the WR corps is looking very thin. At the moment, your starting WRs this Friday will likely be rookie Desean Jackson and Greg Lewis. Andy said at his press conference he plans on going into the season with the WR corps he has now, although you have to think that behind the scenes they are assessing their options.

okay now I’m all for the Boldin trade

Oh crap. This sucks.

But the silver lining is the emergence of DJ.

I would guess they bring in Joe Horn if all else fails, the Boldin trade seems far fetched at best.

by Whodie126 on Aug 20, 2008 2:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

check that seems Horn is injured.

by Whodie126 on Aug 20, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate Horn, if was so good, why is he leaving Atlanta

Remember Peerless Price,
Also, remember other big time receivers that sucked at old age such as Eric Moulds. We were all beating the door down for these two stiffs. Keep Horn away, please.

I said Horn for his leadership and cheapness seems he was released because he is injured and looks like he’ll sign with the Dolphins …

I have not been one of the people calling for a big trade all offseason. All of that changes now. The performance of the 1st team O has been poor. Now Curtis is gone. Brown’s grace period is very close to being over. The WR spot is in shambles, and if we do not get Boldin in here soon, I’m lowering my hopes for the season quite a bit. This is the turning point. Either we get Boldin, or we face the worst of all the pathetic WR situations we’ve had in the last ten years. Make this move Reid, or pack your bags. I’m done with this nonsense.

The NFC East goes through Philly.

My head exploding.
This hernia is somebody’s idea of a cruel joke

I think we hold the record for players with a sports hernia

by Whodie126 on Aug 20, 2008 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

first #5, then LJ, now curtis

this sports hernia thing is starting to get very irritating. i agree whodie. with two first rounders, i dont see y andy shouldnt cough one up for anquan. he IS a serious boost for our thin WR core. when Kevin comes back, he can play in the spot he is most comforatable, at the #2 spot. As much as a love D-Jax, he wont be the immediate playmaker we need at WR.

I still will only trade only my 1, No Lito, you need him.

This is gonna cause all types of logistical problems, but they gotta figure it out.

If the Eagles dont do something this time

I will not fault McNabb if he tries really hard to get out of Philadelphia after the season

Concretefield can suck it

I totally agree 700

I really see this incident as being the deciding factor. If the fo continues to show that they are not commited to winning now, then McNabb deserves to win somewhere they will worship him and surround him with legitimate weapons. The way that they respond to this will also determine my personal feelings towards the fo. I have been supporting them all along, but their failure to respond to this situation will mean that I want them all out. Clean house.

Does anyone know what the timetable is

for Reggie Brown?

But even if its soon, we dont want him as the 1. We know how that goes…

by 700 Level on Aug 20, 2008 2:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We know how that goes?

How does it go?

In 2006, Reggie as the #1 was just fine when Stallworth was out. We killed the 49ers and Packers and Cowboys and should have beaten the Saints and Bucs. Reggie had 22 catches for 443 yards plus 2 runs for 23 yards and 4 touchdowns in 5 games. That is the single best stretch of games in Reggie Brown’s career.

I say bring it!

I sometimes wonder if you guys actually watch the games and read the box scores.

You know as well as i do that Reggie is not going to get it done without Another WR and Jackson isn’t ready.

That Damn Game...

I knew there was no way we were getting out of that Panthers game without an injury.

Questions: When did this injury occur? Should the starters have been in?

by BFH on Aug 20, 2008 3:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No Boldin for you!

Eagles PR spokesman Howard Eskin says no trades for wide reciever! His justification for his position was pretty lame but it does give you an idea of what the franchise might be thinking.

by SJ-Mike on Aug 20, 2008 3:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They say that all the time.

Then we got Stallworth, Freeman, then they try to trade for Williams and Freeman. We even made a big play for Moss. Watch what they do not what they say.

Maybe we'll run the ball more!

We have a great RB, solid depth behind him and a very good run blocking OL.
Oh wait…….sorry that would make way too much sense.

No way the Cards are dealing Boldin this year and we have zero leverage now.

God damn it this sucks!

The road to victory!

by jayt on Aug 20, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We have plenty of leverage, 2 first round picks and Lito.

Plus Boldin is bolting soon. They’ll be stupid not to trade. But again, the GM is Rod Graves.

Boldin is under contract

For three years thanks to a multi-$10’s of millions extension he signed in 2005. He and his whiny ass act ain’t going anywhere.

by Andrew B on Aug 20, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is why this coaching staff needs a shake up not because they are not good, not because they don’t win but because we end every season with a ton of guys on the effing IR and lately its been starting early. if curtis comes back this season he won’t be the same just like lj was not the same last year and he will pull something else over compensating

by 0sirys on Aug 20, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Blessing in disguise

This gives the Eagles a reason to both keep 6 wideouts and run the ball more with their running backs. That means we probably don’t have to cut any of our good players at these positions, and it gives DeSean Jackson a chance to shine early before the league figures him out.

Reggie Brown has had his best games when McNabb has been forced to treat him as the #1 wideout. See Week 9 2005, Weeks 3-7 2006.

You guys panic way to easily. That’s why you are fans, and not the head coach and VP Player Personnel.

GLew and Baskett haver both done good starting for us before as injury replacements, and DeSean looks terrific too.

by Andrew B on Aug 20, 2008 4:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If we get Boldin, somebody is getting IR'd, just for roster space.

Man, my guess is Abiamiri, we are already running thin on DEs.
This WR situation will definately effect our RB/WR/DE roster situation. Somebody big is getting cut, or somebody is gonna get IRd.

Funny thing, GCobb agreed with me about Abiamiri
Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis will start in place of Kevin Curtis at split end and DeSean Jackson will be in there at flanker in place of Reggie Brown. The flanker spot is off the line of scrimmage and to the tight end side. The split end spot is on the line of scrimmage and away from the tight end.

here is the quote that I wanted to post from GCobb, he agrees that Abiamiri may get IRd
The Eagles are going to have to make a decision about whether to put Curtis or Victor Abiamiri on Injured Reserve which would end their season. The injury to Curtis will put pressure on the Eagles to think harder about Abiamiri’s chances of returning before the season ends

Bryan Smith

How about putting Bryan Smith on IR with some mysterious injury to redhsirt him as a frosh, like with Gocong in 06?

Then the roster could be:
DE – Cole, Parker, Clemmons, Abiamiri, McDougle
DT – Patterson, Bunkley, Laws, Klecko, Howard

Howard could swing both ways until Abiamiri is healthy.

by Andrew B on Aug 21, 2008 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont like the idea of klecko still being on this squad, he came here to be an FB, but he’s still on the roster as a DT. it just seems to be that he’s here for the wrong reason lol.

Can someone tell me what causes a sports hernia?

Is it just the air in Philly or what?

But hopefully this will give Desean a little bit of time to shine, I really like this kid. He better not let me (or the rest of Philly down), he said that he wanted a chance to prove himself….well, he’s definitely got it.

Excessing straining in the abdoman

usually from lifting weights or torquing your body wrong.
Your musle lining tears (in any part of the adboman wall), and causes a soft spot in the muscle. Your intenstines then begin to pertrude through the soft spot caused by the tear. These intenstinal pertrusions is what the hernia actually is.

To repair, they will insert a peice of wire screen coated with growth hormones. The muscle should grow throw the mesh screen and is reinforced (kinda of like cement w/ rebar). This prevents future hernias in that area. However, some have reported that the mesh screens used can some times irritate the muscles and cause infections. This would require a second surgery, (removal, repair, and reinstalling a second hernia patch).

Curtis may have torqued his body running in the rain.

Eskin had the guy doing the surgery on and he said 3-6 weeks…

by JasonB on Aug 20, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This may sound goofy, but I hope Curtis takes his time and I hope the Eagles don’t rush him. A muscle tear in your abdomen affects everything you do athletically, and it obviously could severely inhibit what wide receivers are supposed to do.

Get into recovery, work hard, get 100% healthy, and get back out there.

The comments here are more intelligent than on Comcast ...

… but for some reason I don’t think Boldin is the answer. Maybe I’ve just learned not to get my hopes up. The Eagles will do something prudent, they always do … maybe Joe Horn, maybe DeSean gets more playing time. I’d bank on that before Boldin.

Maybe I’m getting old, I never used to buy that “bad chemistry guy” stuff, but I think I’ve seen enough Rosenhaus clients on my team. They don’t do anything but cause drama.

I’d just as soon stick with the one we have (Lito) and have a suffocating defense, and then lean on the running game once the depressed road-grader gets back in shape. You’re gonna be complaining they don’t run the ball enough in three weeks anyway.

You know the Birds. They won’t run it (they might pass it to all their healthy RBs and TEs though!) and there’s a good chance they won’t make a flashy signing. I wouldn’t object to one, but the guy who brought up Eric Moulds is right.

We whine and complain about the moves they make and don’t make, but how many times has a guy left the Birds and gone on to a great career? Bobby Taylor? Troy Vincent? Staley? Trotter? Hugh Douglas? How many FA WRs have they passed on who went on to do nothing elsewhere?

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I trust the front office’s judgement.

(gets Eagle fan card revoked)

P.S. Re: Curtis, Be glad he didn’t try to play through it like McNabb in ’05.

Welcome

South Jersey Mike, you are welcome.

Maybe you can lobby for them to give me a salary if you think I am close to being their mouthpiece?

by Andrew B on Aug 20, 2008 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cant help you there...

Sarcasm aside there’s a bit of respect there. If your the same guy from Football Outsiders (and Im almost positive you are). I was a fan of your campaign to minimize the impact that TO had on the offense. I dont know if you can be the mouthpiece but your a stat churner and if I was in a position to do so I would hire you to work for the mouthpiece.

Listen the Cards are not going to give up Boldin and if they do we will get raped in the deal …

Shaheer McBride it’s your time to shine … but seriously its time to start to look at our WR core and see how this makes sense.

This might just be DeSeans dreams and nightmares coming to fruition in front of our eyes.

Boldin and Brown on Footballoutsiders

Boldin
2003 – DVOA 3.6% (ranked 30th), 61% catch rate on 165 reception attempts, 16 games
2004 – DVOA -21.8% (ranked 77th), 54% catch rate on 105 reception attempts, 10 games
2005 – DVOA 3.4% (ranked 34th), 60% catch rate on 171 reception attempts, 14 games
2006 – DVOA 3.9% (ranked 39th), 55% catch rate on 152 reception attempts, 16 games
2007 – DVOA 16.7% (ranked 17th), 70% catch rate on 100 reception attempts, 12 games
10.2 reception attempts per game

Brown
2005 – DVOA -5.4% (ranked 54th), 54% catch rate on 79 reception attempts, 16 games
2006 – DVOA 15.4% (ranked 18th), 51% catch rate on 91 reception attempts, 16 games
2007 – DVOA -7.3% (ranked 66th), 55% catch rate on 111 reception attempts, 16 games
5.9 reception attempts per game

I don’t see a really big difference here other than in opportunities. If Reggie got 4 more balls thrown his way per game, he’d have 525 more yards per season, 36 more receptions, and 4 more touchdowns.`

If you want more prominence from the wideouts, wouldn’t it make more sense to just throw more balls to them than to throw away draft picks for players who aren’t going to give you much more?

by Andrew B on Aug 20, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been with you until now, with Curtis being out 6-8 weeks I don’t see how we can go through almost the first half of the season with a starting line up of a gimpy Reggie, DeSean/Avant/Baskett/Lewis combo. I think we have to go after someone, and I’m not saying over pay for Anquan to pry him away from the Cards unless we intend on giving up Reggie which means we will have a starting line up of Boldin and DeSean/Avant/Baskett/Lewis which is almost a mirror image.
