Anquan Boldin
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/18/cold-war-between-boldin-cardinals/
On the surface, everything appears to be fine. Arizona Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin wants a new contract, realizes he’s not going to get one that reflects his market value, and plans to honor the final three years of the deal before moving on.
Since Boldin shared his views on the matter several weeks ago, the story has died. The far bigger issues that have trickled out of camp relate to the struggles to produce healthy bodies at the center position, and the question of whether Kurt Warner will get his wish for an actual competition at the quarterback position.
But there’s a full-blown cold war between Boldin and the team. As we hear it, Boldin and coach Ken Whisenhunt have not communicated — at all — for the entire training camp and preseason. Boldin and none of the coaches are speaking, and Boldin has generally kept to himself.
This one runs deeper than the same-old contract squabbles. When the team opted to escape the cap crunch created by the back end of receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s rookie deal by giving him a four-year, $40 million contract, a huge disparity was created between two comparable players. For every dollar Boldin earns in 2008, Fitzgerald will get four.
The ratio doesn’t get much better in 2009 or 2010, the final two years of Boldin’s contract.
And, yes, a contract is a contract. However, when a team gives so much money to one of the two best wideouts in the game and doesn’t take care of the other one, it creates a serious problem.
The same dynamic plays out in workplaces throughout the country. Two people do the same job, and perform at about the same level. Each of them thinks in his or her heart that he’s more valuable than the other. So if one is getting rewarded significantly more than the other, the other naturally will feel unappreciated, and disrespected.
The Cardinals’ apparent plan is to get through the 2008 season with a $2.5 million salary to Boldin, and then to try to trade Boldin. They plan to re-start negotiations with Boldin later in the season, but unless they’re prepared to pay him in the same ballpark as Fitzgerald, a deal isn’t likely. In the interim, the team won’t give Boldin and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, permission to attempt to line up a suitable trade.
The reality is that the Cardinals have two No. 1 wideouts, but have chosen to pay only one of them accordingly. And, as a practical matter, they can’t pay two of them $10 million per year.
Though Boldin, by all appearances, doesn’t intend to launch a 2005 T.O.-style effort to get out of town, the fact that the relationship between player and team has deteriorated to the point of no communication is every bit as undesirable as the salary-cap conundrum that Fitzgerald’s contract created.
This one’s even more potentially disruptive, even if Boldin does nothing to be disruptive. Fitzgerald’s situation played out in the offseason. Boldin’s case is unfolding at a time when it’s important to get and to keep everyone on the same page.
The challenge for the Cardinals is to decide whether they want one more year of Fitzgerald and Boldin under the present circumstances, or whether they want to get what they can for Boldin and move on.
The problem is that, as the 2008 regular season approaches, other teams will be less inclined to bring in a key new player, pay him huge money, and scramble to get him ready to play.

well
if theres one thing we have going for us is that the eagles will trade for players right before the season i.e. donte stallworth

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Remember the Eagles always talk about how much they love their WRs. But they went out and got Stallworth, and on time they signed Antonio Freeman.
My only concern is, how old is Boldin? I prefer that he be under 27, if he is older than 28 I may not be as interested. I want a receiver to be here for a long time.
I hold it doesn’t cost us Lito though. Just one of our 2 first rounders.

He’s 27 turning 28 … I think … anyway the only way I would want them to make a run at Boldin is if Reggie is hurt seriously … other than that I’m pretty excited about the team as it sits. I mean Curtis and Boldin had pretty similar numbers and Kevin didn’t have Fitz on the other side of the field.

True that,
But Reggie gets no respect from the Defense. And to be honest, neither does Curtis. (I love Curtis as a WR). Teams really like to press these guys, and they haven’t been getting open. That is Desean has been a major target. He gets open.
I hate Reggie Brown, I think Avant is the same type of player, just better. And his contract makes it even worse. You can’t trade him, or cut him, you will take a 8 million dollar hit. He is gonna be on this squad for years to come.
If you get Boldin, the DBs will back off a little, and Curtis will be a beast on the 2 position with DeSean and Avant/Basket playing slot. Eagles would crush teams, even more than 04. But I agree, the WR are OK as they sit.

Only one problem, What do we do with Reggie, you would have to IR him,
Aquiring a new receiver causes roster space and salary cap problems due to the fact that we can’t move Reggie Brown.
Reggie has a 2,960,708 cap number this year, and 8,177,415 amount that callapse if he is traded or cut. You would have to IR Reggie Brown just to get bye this year with out cutting Basket or Avant. But you will have to keep Reggie on your roster till at leat 2010 where his callapsing dollar amount is only 3,500,000. Reggie’s contract is a killer.

They will only do this if that have to IR Reggie, which I doubt.

Why Boldin
Why do you guys even want him? The only reason you think he is good is because the rest of the Cardinals team besides Fitzgerald sucks. All the Cardinals do is throw to Fitzgerald and Boldin, which is why they have inflated numbers. The Eagles also throw to the running backs, tight ends.
Receptions by RB’s in 2007
Cardinals – 64
Eagles – 111
Receptions by TE’s in 2007
Cardinals – 37
Eagles – 49 (a down year – 64 in 06, 75 in 05, 68 in 04)
Receptions by Wideouts in 2007
Cardinals – 255
Eagles – 193
Take away 1/4 of Boldin’s receptions to feed Westbrook and LJ, and he’s a 60 catch, 780 yard guy, just like Reggie Brown.
Look at the important numbers for Boldin – career 13 yards per reception, 16 receptions per touchdown, missed 12 games in the past 4 years. Then look at Reggie Brown – career 14 yards per reception, 9 receptions per touchdown, missed 0 games in career.
I’d rather have Reggie Brown and our draft picks we would have to send to Arizona.

I don't think people really want Boldin, just that his situation makes him a possible
before season trade matterial. I do think that he brings respect and a threat to your offense. That is something that we don’t have right now. But I agree with both you and Whodie, I can car less if a deal was or wasn’t made. Its not like we are in bad shape there at WR. But, if you can upgrade, why not?

Not an upgrade
My point is he is not an upgrade.
He’s injury prone, gains fewer yards per reception, and scores fewer touchdowns per reception than Curtis or Brown.
If he doesn’t get doubled most plays, like happens to Randy Moss, TO, Steve Smith, and guys like that, then he doesn’t bring more respect either. I’ve never heard that he does.

I can see how statically say that. But Boldin is very Physical, and is a tremendous deep ball guy for his size. That is why I beleive he is intimidating to DBs. But untill he puts his money were his mouth is, many will always say his numbers aren’t tremendous.
Andrew B, (I really do respect your opinion), But, honestly, just seeing the guy play, I have to disagree and say that he is an upgrade, even if it isn’t statiscally a tremendous upgrade. But I guess its just a matter of preference (some like chocolate, some like vanilla).

wait...
so you people HONESTLY dont believe that Anquan Boldin is an improvement over Reggie Brown?

You know what, I just re read your post, and see what you are saying
I take back my previous post, I do think he is an upgrade. I thought you were saying that he wasn’t an upgrade. Sorry for the confusion.

Reggie has 2 years less experience and doesn’t have Larry Fitzgerald on the other side of the line demanding if not a double team at least the best CB on the field.
Reggie is 9 receptions or 135 yards per TD Anquan is 14 Receptions or 188 yards per TD
Reggie has played in all 16 games Anquan has played in all 16 games just twice in his 5 seasons
I think Boldin is a good WR and anyone should want him on there team, but do I think he is an upgrade over Reggie Brown. NO.
People expected the world from Reggie in his 3rd year (with no real mentorship mind you) and rightfully so he had a fantastic sophmore season … but Boldins stat line looks like a roller coaster too.

no question boldin would be an improvement over all of our WRs combined. i would trade lito and a 3rd rounder if i had to to (hehe) get him.

Boldin is an upgrade because he is respected. Ou WRs are so thin now. Get him in here.
The NFC East goes through Philly.
