Tony Hunt gets first team reps at full back

It seems as though Tony Hunt's impressive performance against Carolina has opened some eyes among the Eagles coaching staff... but the problem is with Westbrook/Booker/Buckhalter all but guaranteed roster spots, where is there room for Tony Hunt?

How about fullback?

The Eagles will have a new fullback taking some of the reps with the first team offense today at practice. His name is Tony Hunt, the team's third round draft pick in 2007. Hunt has impressed head coach Andy Reid with his play on offense and, more importantly, on special teams in recent weeks.

Interesting development...

This would answer a lot of questions and make things a lot easier. Unfortunately one of Hunts biggest problems was missing assignments and poor blocking in the passing game … hopefully he has learned.

I worry about this a little, if he sucks at blocking, they it will throw BWest off a little.

I guess he has to try and learn in 2 weeks. If he can block well enough as to not compromise Westbrook, that would be sweek, a FB that can run, finally.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the Eagles keep Hunt at fullback.

You can give him time to learn, and use Klecko on short range blocks, like 3rd and short etc. At least until Hunt learns.

If you cut Hunt, he will get picked up by another team. Now if you cut Collins, Davis, and Lawton, you can practice squad one of them (nowbody else wants them). If after weeks into the season the Tony Hunt experiment doesn’t work out, you can just promote the practice squad fullback and cut Hunt if needed.

This is it

I have been waiting for this. We have all been following the FB situation closely, and I was highly critical of the Oscar nominated ‘Klecko experiment’. I like Collins, and I hope he does well, but Hunt is the best candidate to be the total answer at FB this year. Now, I understand the concerns about his blocking, but if he is able to perform well enough, this could be the best way to further his development in a stacked HB situation. Hunt is the answer, just give him his shot.

The NFC East goes through Philly.

I don't think that the Eagles are giving him a shot because Collins and Davis are bad,

I just think that this is the only way they can hide Hunt on the roster. Its a no lose situation for them. I don’t think they expect much from the FB position this year, especially with the number of passes we have seen from this offense.

our fullback needs to be able to block and catch … running is just an added bonus … here Hunt can run and he can catch pretty decent … hopefully he learns how to block.

Speculation

This is a 45 man vs. 53 man roster move.

I pointed out before the Eagles have always kept 5 running backs and fullbacks combined on the roster. On any given Sunday, only 4 can be active because of numbers at other positions.

Putting Hunt in as a Fullback lets them play games with this. The roster could still be Westbrook, Buckhalter, Booker, Hunt, Davis, but now Davis can be made inactive, and Hunt can be the Fullback. If Hunt didn’t play Fullback, and this was still the roster, he’d probably have to wait for another regularly active player to get injured for him to have a shot at some gametime.

Next year is key.

Buck is in his last year, so they figured out cutting Hunt and Moats this year, and ending up looking for a bruising back next year is stupid when you have already one on the roster now in Tony. So they are going to keep Hunt as the backup FB this year, and if he does make progress, he might become our full time one next year, or even during the course of the season. But expecting him to learn the position and ends up #1 is a bit tough.

could be a great move

the jags made greg jones into a FB after he played RB in college. He was in the pro-bowl last year. He’s been getting some reps as a pounder in a single back set, and has looked good so far. I imagine that when it’s time for Fred Taylor to step down, they’ll have another two headed monster in Jones and Jones-Drew. This would work well for Philly as well.
