Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles Open Thread

Carolina Panthers @ Philadelphia Eagles

Thursday, Aug 14, 2008, 8:00 PM EDT

Location - Lincoln Financial Field

TV - FOX national game

Radio - 94.1 WYSP, 610 WIP

Time to take a break from the Olympics for a few hours and take in some Eagles football. The Birds take on the Carolina Panthers in their  preseason home opener for the 2nd straight year in a row. The starters should play for about a half so we'll be getting out first real good look at the team this year. It should also be interesting to watch the play of Kevin Kolb who Andy Reid hinted may play the entire second half.

Remember also that the Eagles hold the Panthers' first round pick next year as a result of a draft day trade Carolina made for OT Jeff Otah. Otah should square off against Trent Cole so it will be interesting to see how he looks and really how the Panthers as a team look.

Leave your comments and thoughts on who looks good and who doesn't! We'll be talking football all night, come join us!

Anyone know if the delay got fixed this offseason?

Concretefield can suck it

It probably depends on what kind of cable or satellite you have. They sync it to TV, but if you’re watching HD or digital cable or satellite… There’s a chance it could be off.

I see they put Pam Oliver on the other team’s sideline. My guess is that happens everytime she covers an Eagles game.

Helps when you don’t have to jump to get it in your hands. 50% blame to Booker (you’re right about selling out for the catch) and McNabb (give the guy a chance to make the play with good ball placement. Like that throw to Curtis just now.)

McNabb just threw a wide open Jackson that smoked his man downfield…

Just out of Jackson’s reach…wasn’t really an overthrow. I think the wet field slowed Jackson down a step on the double move.

Particularly impressive when you realize it’s a line full of backups, first time starters, and players shifting positions.

by HoosierPop on Aug 14, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What are the chances we see all the starters when/if this game restarts?

by HoosierPop on Aug 14, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

B’c the field will be even more soaked and bad for footing, it’s preseason, there’re two prep games left, and there’s already one starter down with a twinge.

For all those who can't see the game on TV..

Check out www.channelsurfing.net…you can watch any live TV broadcast, mostly sports, for free over the internet. It’s how I’ve been watching the olympics. They have the Eagles and steelers game on tonight.

Waycross?

YOu mean the town that was first settled around 1820 known as “Old Nine” or “Number Nine” and then Pendleton? It was renamed Tebeauville in 1857, incorporated in 1866 and designated county seat of Ware County in 1873. Then it was incorporated as “Way Cross” on March 3, 1874.

by JasonB on Aug 14, 2008 9:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ahh wikipeda…

Actually this is a pretty funny stat about Waycross, GA

During the 1950’s the city had a tourist gimmick. The local police would stop motorists with out-of-state license plates and escort them to downtown Waycross. Where they would be met by the Welcome World Committee and given overnight lodging, dinner and a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp. The tradition faded away after the interstates opened through Georgia

Desean Jackson might be listed at the #6 WR… but he was first in when Reggie came out.

And he’s not playing in the slot either..

Player of the night so far is Herremans. He’s locking down Peppers just the same way he owned Jason Taylor a few years ago.

by HoosierPop on Aug 14, 2008 9:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so pretty much the normal Eagles ST

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually the first punt by Rocca was a highlight. He put it right inside the 10.

Otherwise the ST have sucked. They just don’t give these returners any opening at all.

by JasonB on Aug 14, 2008 9:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

last week

dropping the ball is what gave him the opening for the good return (which he then spoiled by tripping). Last week Demps looked strongest in the return game in my opinion. I would like to see more of him tonight and going forward.

by quakerfan on Aug 14, 2008 9:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but the blocking still doesn’t seem to be working well. The gunner(s) are on top of the return men far too quickly.

Well, lets put that half behind us and see if Kolb can bounce back from his previous so-so performance.

by thwalls on Aug 14, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

umm, I made nachos with green onions, jalapeños, sour cream and tomatoes on the side.

Chad needs to hold onto that ball, but for a rook I am impressed so far.

5 drops in a half is bad, even in rain.

speaking of drops, it is hard to forgive 2 kickoff drops all year let alone 2 in the same game in a row, rain or not. Booker better impress soon on KR, or it is time to give Johnson his shot.

going to pee and get another beer in time for the 2nd half.

Chad? … you mean DJ?

And I’d rather have Demps back for KR he looked solid we should see him in the second half

I would love to see more of Feeley though since I think he just screams the entire time he is playing…he’s a wild man, he doesn’t care about throwing to the receiver, as long as he yells like a banshee throws that damn ball as hard as he can.

Doh! my bad. I am off tomorrow so I had a few :)

And yea, Demps did look good at KR, but DJ still seems like a big play waiting to happen. Either way, Booker hhs not impressed me so far.

There’s that Kolb to Jackson connection already.

by JasonB on Aug 14, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sucks for DJackson, he’s playing most of the 2nd half too

by thwalls on Aug 14, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ahhh I can’t get the game online

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tipped pass INT… tough luck for Kolb there.

by JasonB on Aug 14, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was just about to stay … nice step up in the pocket … for an INT

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 10:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

dont let it get tipped

That interception was the first ever by that Wesley guy in his 7 year career.

man Jackson is impressing

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 10:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he recognizes zone and man coverage like a vet it seems.

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 10:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s true. He has a knack for finding space in the middle of the field.

by JasonB on Aug 14, 2008 10:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why does Hank always try and ‘no pun intended’ Baskett catch every jump ball

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That looked suspiciously like PI.

by Tracer Bullet on Aug 14, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jackson leaves his feet on every pass and catches the ball with his body. He needs to break those bad habits if he wants to be a big-play WR.

by Tracer Bullet on Aug 14, 2008 10:59 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’m impressed with him even if he does jump in the air too much

by eagleyosh on Aug 14, 2008 11:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The thing is, he is always pretty open and he likes to hide the ball because his first move is so fast … if it works for him it works for me.

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 11:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but in the time it takes for him to land and gather himself, he’s given the defender a chance to catch up. He’s costing himself YAC.

McDougle might actually make the squad. I’ll be darned.

by Tracer Bullet on Aug 14, 2008 11:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McDougle is playing is way onto this team

2 weeks ago, if you told me that what DJ would have impressed me with so far was his disciplined short routes and his small to medium zone seams I would have not believed you.

I figured by now he would have made a few rookie mistakes, as well as a few long gains as well as a long return or 2. Instead, his game more resembles an old vet who is known as a possession receiver. Not that I am complaining, it is actually impressive to see that kind of savvy in a rookie WR.

by captain nodar on Aug 14, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’d say it’s great for a west coast offense team…the point isn’t big plays, but possession receiving.

by eagleyosh on Aug 14, 2008 11:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i guess andy is tired of brnging in guys slowly. he wants to see our big picks do stuff early

by NickPampani on Aug 14, 2008 11:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

and he’s doing it with the first team … thats what is impressing me …

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 11:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ill tell u if dj does this in the season ill be thrilled pluss he can only get better

by NickPampani on Aug 14, 2008 11:08 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the west coast offense is really tough and he seems to get it

I posted this article in fanshots … smarty marty seems impressed with his ability to pick up the offense so quickly …. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Eagles-s-Jackson-proving-to-be-a-fast-learner;_ylt=AvY2Doa2B4OJQ1CQ8Um.9mt.T4h4?urn=nfl,100809

nice job by Hunt

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 11:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who you would you rather make the team. hunt or lewis?

by Remis on Aug 14, 2008 11:37 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lewis he seems to make enough big catches to make it worth keeping him around … I really like Hunt and you could argue him because G-Lew had his chance … but what have you done for me lately and G-Lew just scored a TD (on the back of hunts 30 yards rushing) … can I waffle?

by Whodie126 on Aug 14, 2008 11:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was actually Bryan Smith. Buck got that wrong.

Ahh, yeah he’s having a horrible preseason. Problem is, no one else has even taken snaps at C. So I don’t know if we can cut him.
