The Soul win Arena Bowl 2008!

Ok, so it's not the Super bowl, and it's not the Stanley Cup, and it's certainly not World Series...but it is a championship nonetheless that has been brought to Philadelphia (that involves a Football) since 1960 (it's the first championship period since 1983, I know.)

For the most part it was nice to see a football team of philadelphia, arena or otherwise, dominate the field and not simply eek out a victory.  True the San Jose Sabercats racked up a number of points in the last 11 seconds of the game but for the majority of all 4 quarters the Soul backed by Matt D'Orazio dominated the field.  We've got an amazing quarterback (who happened to be the backup), an outstanding wide receiver core, and the most dominant defensive line in the league.  It's nice to have a team in philadelphia dominate, rather than just squeek by.  We had a 13-3 season, and to top it off we have the Arena bowl trophy and by the way, it's our third playoff appearance in a 5 season history.  Nice.

Now lets see our Eagles take a lesson from the Soul and bring a 13-3 season and a ring to Philadelphia.

Go Eagles.

False.

You said in your post this was the first championship in Philly since 1983. In fact, it is the 16th pro championship (and 17th if you want to count Villanova’s upset of Georgetown in ‘85).

The game recap at ESPN has a handy-dandy chart here:

Still and all I’d probably trade all of them for one Eagles/Phils/Flyers/Sixers title.

You misunderstand.

I meant that this was first championship WIN since the 76ers won in 1983 against the Lakers. So as far as professional teams go, I don’t know of any other professional championship win by Philadelphia since 1983 other than this recent Soul win, do you?

Well, it depends on what you call a pro team. The wings are a pro lacrosse team…

I will say that the fact the Soul game got national TV exposure on ABC probably does bring it above the level of a pro lacrosse or indoor soccer titles…

OK, I can’t get the proper URL at work because I use a proxy to access ESPN, sorry about the wrong link:

Here’s the right one.

Don't forget the USFL

The Philadelphia Stars won the USFL Championship in 1984 led by Sam Mills, Kelvin Bryant, Chuck Fusina, and of course Coach Jim Mora.

Just got back from New Orleans

Let me just say Philly took over New Orleans … I had friends EVERYWHERE it was awesome to be so far from home but feel like I was still in Philly.

If you have never been to New Orleans I suggest checking it out it is a lot of fun and everything you have heard whether you beleived it or not is absolutely true.

New Orleans did a fantastic job putting this event on which is expected seeing as how they’ve had practice. The game was soooo awesome I don’t know if they showed it on TV but Bon Jovi and Jaws put on there championship hats a little early and shortly after San Jose made that final run with the onsides kicks. They swiftly removed the hats and stopped a pre-mature celebration. Me, my friends and all the other philly fans just looked around like “here we go again” but thankfully they pulled it out and the stadium went WILD. Also San Jose fans were very classy almost all stayed for the trophy presentation and gave the Soul a standing O.

Finally the Superdome is freaking HUGE and very intimidating, the game was next door but it was amazing to see I am considering going to a game there to get inside that building is unreal to stand next to.
