Trade or Cut...or Keep Lito?

[Note by JasonB, 06/04/08 5:17 PM EDT ] promoted from fanposts

Another year, another pre-training camp hissy fit in the works.  Disgruntled Eagles CB Lito Sheppard skipped the first day of voluntary OTAs...now bear in mind, my fellow birdbrains, that these OTAs are optional (hence the word "voluntary"), and therefore players don't have to show up, but one cannot help but wonder if this is the start of a planned holdout by Lito.

Star-divide

Personally, I'm not alarmed by it.  But the question remains: what should be done about him?  The ESPN talking heads have said that having three starting-caliber, Pro Bowl-caliber cornerbacks is simply untenable, especially given Lito's apparent dissatisfaction with his contract.  Eagles personnel, Cap'n Andy chief among them, have said that keeping all three CBs would give them a plethora of options on pass defense, as well as give them a real pool of talent that has the potential to lead the league in takeaways.  Who is right?  Reid and Co. make valid points, but keeping Lito will most likely mean having to pay him more money, and I'm not so sure the Eagles brass will be willing to throw a big heap of dough at a guy who has a history of in juries as well as a history of recovering slowly from those injuries.  Plus, we all know how Andy, Joe and Jeffrie feel about players who cause disruption from within the ranks (like a certain headcase down in Dallas that shall remain nameless).

Andy is acting as if things are peachy, but it's early.  If training camp rolls around and Lito is nowhere near Lehigh, be prepared to see the same hard-nosed treatment that #81 got back in '05, which means deactivation and eventually being cut from the team.  I just don't think the organization is truly willing to rework Lito's contract for the amount he wants, especially considering they've already spent the defecit of a small country for Asante Samuel's services.  They've dangled him in front of other teams, and there was word that a deal with Jacksonville would go through on draft day...but it wasn't to be.  And both Lito and Sheldon will not like being relegated to splitting playing time if Lito is in fact kept.  In a perfect world, I'd love to have Asante, Lito and Sheldon all on the team, as they would  probably be (if all were happy and healthy) the best group of CBs in the NFL.  But this ain't a perfect world.  This is Philly.  And so, Iggles Nation, what is to be done?  Do we cut him if he becomes a detriment to the team?  Do we try to package him in a trade deal, even though earlier attempts fell flat?  Or do we completely take leave of our senses and pay him his money?  I have a feeling all will be resolved by training camp, and that the Eagles will eventually jettison Lito via trade or cutting him, but what are your thoughts?

Poll
What do with Lito?
  • Nothing, he'll report for camp.
  • Give him more money!
  • Get rid of him, $2 mil should be enough!

As soon as possible

I’m happy with every soulution (trade/pay him), just do it ASAP. We really don’t need any more Lito-saga…

You have to keep him!

I understand the defensive position that we will want to take (because of recent history). But, this three headed monster has the potential to take us all the way! If he acts up (which I don’t think is probable) we need to tell the media to write articles about injury prone players(and how they have no leverage at all). Some writers have said that the WR idea is a bone and disrepectful to Lito. Does that help the team? Or the readers of the papers? Unless a person is a transplant or a roach Dallas fan, I know we don’t want to hear that Lito is right to sit out or bitch about his contract. Out country is amidst a recession and a lot of fans are hurting at the gas pumps. Who cares about Lito’s contract anyway? Any encouragement that is given by the media shoud be shot down on WIP and on the blogs. A guy signs a contract and he plays, thats the deal. No one is asking the Phreak for a refund are they? This is a joke and I hope that we as Eagles consumers understand the power that we posess. If the Eagles don’t pay for players and underpay and undercoach and draft (which can be argued BTW) we shouldn’t pay for tickets or jersey’s or 5 dollars beers etc… Let’s not give Lito anyroom, he play’s or he is out for the year. Noone should condone any BS!!!

No leverage

As many other players have discovered, the team holds all the cards once you sign on the dotted line.

Eventually, Lito is going to have to show up to feed his family, because he won’t want to pay the fines for skipping Training Camp or lose game checks for holding out during the season.

All he’s doing right now is limiting his potential to get injured and giving Sheldon a leg up on remaining starter, so the net is probably a wash for him personally.

If he didn’t want the burden of “only” having 3 million reasons to live per year, he shouldn’t have signed that extension in 2004 with the 8 million reasons immediately to re-up. Michael Lewis didn’t.

Exactly

Lito has zero leverage so the only way he can show his discontent is be a no-show at OTAs. Like you stated he’ll be there for camp.

The only logical choice is to keep him...

he'll be at training camp.

Lito doesn’t often talk to the media it may be possible that he is out for personal reasons … doubtful but he’ll be at camp.

Incentive deal

The answer is simple. Rework Lito’s contract for next year with an incentive-based deal. If he plays in all the games and notches a bunch of INTs he gets paid like one of the big boys. If he doesn’t, then he doesn’t get paid. Then he can put himself on the market the following year.

he doesn't deserve a restructure ...

you need to earn a new deal even if it is incentive laden, Lito has no reason to be unhappy with his contract, if anything the Eagles should ask for there money back for all the games he missed. No sweat he’ll be at camp and he’ll play RCB.

Loyalty

The EAGLES big wigs need to practice what they preach. If they want a player to be loyal they need to set the example. It’s been their policy to be discourteous when it comes to restructuring or resigning loyal veteran players like Hugh Douglas and Jeremiah Trotter. Lito deserves better than that. If anything we should be talking about how the front office disrupts the locker room.
