Did I mention I hate GCobb???
So between all of his bull shit in the past week and whining and now this article. He's pretty much not only given up on this season, but pretty much the franchise in all... what... an... ass.... before you start spouting off that this could be the end of an era in philly and blah blah blah blah... here's an idea... why don't we actually play some games this year eh? i know it's stupid to judge the team on small things such as, you know, the outcome of the season and all, but what do ya say, let's give it a shot! ass...

I like this bold statement
This season will see the Eagles rebound to playoff status or struggle again near the bottom of the league and the ramifications will likely be huge.
So the Eagles will either be good or not this year. I guess he’s right about that!

I'm not the biggest GCobb fan in the world.
but I don’t think he’s really wrong here.
I think McNabb needs to play well this year, or the Kevin Kolb era will begin in 2009. And I think McNabb’s kind of the lynchpin of the group Cobb mentions (ugh, it’s hard to talk about “Kolb” and “Cobb” in the same post without mixing them up).
If McNabb proves he’s still worthy of being the franchise QB, then it makes sense to keep those veterans around. If they decide to move on with Kolb, then I think there’s a “mini-rebuilding” that means they might decide to get younger at those positions as well.
I don’t think they need to blow up the team either way, because they have been trying to re-stock continuously with young talent, but I still think that no matter what the long-term prognisis of the Kevin Kolb “era”, his first season as a starter would probably be a step back from what we’ve come to expect of McNabb.
Why the Hell Not?

Like andy always says, we just need a little tweaking...
The reason that I hate the idea of people characterizing the eagles as being on downward slide, or on the verge of a massive or minor rebuilding, is that a.) we are a young team in general with few “true” veterans, and b.) last year wasn’t all that bad when you think about it.
The last part is the most important. We lost several games by a total of 10 points over the span of games, and the only true blow-out that we had came at the hands of the cowboys, as nauseating as that is. We did well last year but didn’t have the true offensive dynamite that we had in past years, but our defense was phenominal. Can you imagine what last year would have been like if we had been just 75 – 80% in the red zone as in years past? We would have been considered dominant last year rather then “a team on the verge of rebuilding” or a team headed for a new coach. McNabbs numbers were good last year, our receivers were good last year, and we hung with the best of them (e.g. New England, Cowboys, Giants). We just couldn’t finish off teams that we were beating. So even though we came off an 8-8 season, it wasn’t a 6-10 season or worse. We finished strong, and I see us coming on strong with new life this year.
GCobb can suck it….suck it long…and suck it hard…

GCobb can suck it….suck it long…and suck it hard…Well that’s not a pleasant image, but I agree with the remainder of your take.
I wrote a while back that if the Birds had scored a TD instead of a fieldgoal in 5 choice games last year, they’d’ve been 12-3-1.
That’s only 4 points. I think the Eagle management has gone out and found a way to procure those 4 points in other aspects of the game. Maybe this D is 1 or 2 points better per game this year, the offense (with a healthy DMac, and Little John) is 2 or 3 points better per game, and the Special teams is 1 point better – there’s your 4 points.
Seriously, the Eagles, who were never at full strength on offense, played the toughest schedule in the league last year and yet they still finished out 8-8.

Terrible Article
I think it’s funny how he notes that Dawkins, Runyan and Thomas might all be gone next year if we struggle. Right…and they’re all at the end of their contracts and all might’ve retired anyways. So I’m not sure what point he’s trying to make. Second, I think the Eagles have already been rebuilding for some time. Look at the defensive front seven. It was basically created post-2005. They’ve almost perfected the art of permanent rebuilding.

lotta people are doomsaying this season because of last season.
in all reality we were one muffed punt away from the playoffs last year we were the odd man out by one game. that problem has been fixed.
the eagles were the number 6 offense in the league last year that has been upgraded
the eagles were the number 10 defense in the league last year also upgrade
our special teams is what was avg at best and you got a dynamic returner that could be among the best in the league .
you also have a mcnabb that can plant to through and get away from pressure now.
people are quick to point out the sacks but most of those sacks came in the beginning of the year when mcnabb couldn’t get away from pressure and 1/4 of them in that one giants game where you had 2 lineman out and herremans injured next to winston justice in his first game and justice receiving no help against a DE that ate up probowler matt light in the superbowl and spit him out.
and you can say these are all excuses and that is fine but i do not see this smae kind of performance out of this team with everyone healthy .

+1
great points. Everyone is quick to point out that we struggled on offense but we were still in the top 10. Justice getting his first start again Osi?? can we really judge this kid on that?? they didn’t even use B-West to chip.
McNabb! he was coming off of knee surgery EARLY, Curtis put up Pro Bowl numbers in his first season as a number 1 and not playing the slot and a new offense. This team will be magical last year, there was a reason Wojo picked the Eagles to be the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL last year before the season began (ironically he had us losing to the Pats).

Good Point
It’s amazing to me how many people forget that Donovan was playing the entire season with a bum knee. I can’t even imagine how that affected his mechanics. If he’s healthy, and by all acounts he’s almost there, then I think we’re right back up there.

There’s lots of reasons to be optimistic going into this season. On the flip side of that coin, I think we’ll remember this season as a failure if we don’t make the NFC Championship game at the very least. This team has Superbowl potential, there’s no reason to have low expectations just because the Eagles didn’t make the playoffs last year (when they definitely should have if they hadn’t thrown away the chances they had).*

We weren't that bad,
We were very close to win a bunch of different games. The Seahawks, Pats, Cowboys, Bears and Giants were really close games.
I think that our new defense, improved special teams could cover those games. If our Offense just stays on the same level we could win more games next year.
I still think that our Offense could even grow back to the 2006 level, we could win the SB. Strong AFC and all.
GCOBB is a ok guy, but this is all just speculation because a few injuries for every team could change every teams trajectories.

I hear you.
In the Packers game if we had our new and improved special teams – we win – shit we’d’ve won with Mahe.
The improved D might stop Brian Griese’s finest moment before it started.
And improved special teams and improved health on offense wins that Giants game.
Looking back at the play by play for that game hurts.
Mike Patterson recovers Brandon Jacobs fumble.
1-Goal at the 8; Todd Herremans False start; Sack; Short completion; Incomplete; Field Goal.
Oh yeah and,
1st and 10 at NYG 39 (:05 remaining in 4th quarter) D.Akers 57 yard field goal is No Good, Hit Right Uprightfinal score 16-13.
Just need a couple of tweaks and we’re there. It’s disappointing we got no obvious help in the redzone, but maybe Reggie and his 100 balls a day will live up to last year’s hype, and hopefully Baskett (6’4”, 220) is getting some reps in too…

Is it Philadelphia fans that are the problem...
or might it actually be the relentless negativity of the local press?
