Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Which team will be this year's Giants?

It could be the Eagles says ESPN's Matt Mosley.. .

I realize the Jacksonville Jaguars would be the logical choice if you have them ranked behind the Colts in the AFC South, but let's go with something a little less obvious. The Eagles' season was doomed from the start last season because of the uncertainty of how starting quarterback Donovan McNabb would respond from ACL surgery and because of the family issues that plagued head coach Andy Reid.

But something funny happened over the last month of the season. The Eagles could have packed it in, but instead they started playing their best football. They should automatically be better on defense with the addition of All-Pro cornerback Asante Samuel. And the release of veteran Takeo Spikes will actually make them more athletic. Jeremiah Trotter's replacement, Omar Gaither, grew into his role as the season went on and I think he'll be a much more consistent player.

He goes on to talk about some more reasons why it could happen... It makes total sense, but then again it probably would make sense about several teams in the NFC. I'm just not convinced that anyone in the NFC is really head and shoulders above the pack.

The Saints look like they were primed for a real run and they fell flat last year. The Bears go the superbowl and fall flat. Those were the two teams in the NFC Title game in 06... I have no doubt that the same thing could happen again with a number of NFC teams that made the postseason in 07. Dallas has looked like it was on a upswing the past couple years, but then they can't win a playoff game and are getting old at certain positions. The Packers have a big bounce back year and then Favre retires. Anyone want to bet Aaron Rodgers will lead them to another 13-3 record? The Seahawks have hung around... but do they scare anyone? Would they have made the playoffs if they weren't in the NFC West? The Giants won it all, so you'd have to say they're the class of the conference... but they were no more than a wildcard last year and an 8-8 team the previous year. How many experts do anyone think will pick the Giants to repeat? Either as conference or SB champs?

Any of these teams could turn out to be better than I think... but that's the point. There are no Patriots or Colts in the NFC. There's a lot of mediocrity parity.

I think it’s better described as parity. AFC vs NFC has nothing on the NBAs unbalanced conferences. NFC and AFC finished with a season split (32-32).

9 AFC teams finished with a negative point differential. 7 of those teams were outscored by at least 87 points. That’s a lot of punching bags to make the top half of the AFC look good.

Now, while I do believe the best two teams in the NFL belong to the AFC, after that I think it’s pretty fairly matched between the conferences.

Anyways, I know that’s not the point of the article. Anyways, just for fun I’m going to say the Rams, Saints, Eagles, and Packers will win their divisions.

Right, the AFC is a lot more top heavy than the NFC.

A lot of the AFC teams

are going down… The AFC north, IMO, is pretty weak right now. The steelers arent as good as they used to be. Everyone says the AFC is so much better BUT every year the NFC representative plays the AFC representative pretty hard in the super bowl…. except the bears cause they were a joke.

i dont know

the Packers could go 13-3 although i doubt it but look at the devision. they should win that
Bears- lucky to have 6 wins this year
Lions- if deffeence can pull it together mayby 9 wins but packers D can shut them down
Vikings- they might be the best team in the devision NEXT year they need to find a QB and play him for atleast a year so i say 9 wins at best.

I think want makes the NFL

the greatest league, is that no one can possibly predict whats going to happen ie: the ‘99 Rams or ‘01 Pats. I just hope NFL & NFLPA can agree on a CBA because an un-capped season would be horrible and I don’t think anyone wants to see the NFL turn into the MLB.

I think we all can agree that the NFC East will be the most competitive conference in the the NFL.

Nick...

I admit it….I never dreamed the G-Men could win it all. I agree that the NFC East is the most competetive top to bottom.

I haven't kept up with the Eagles this year but it seems to me one of your greatest needs is receiver. McNabb has always been one of my favorite QB's but he and Westbrook can't do it by themselves.

Are you guys satisfied with the team’s draft choices?

Whoops...

Somehow this part didn’t come through…

I haven’t kept up with the Eagles this year but it seems to me that one of your greatest needs is at wide receiver. McNabb has always been one of my favorites but he and Westbrook can’t do it without some help.

Kevin Curtis

Plus, DeSean Jackson. We have plenty of fast talent there. And quality possession receivers. I wouldn’t call it a strength, in the way our DLine, OLine, secondary, RB core etc are strengths, but I wouldn’t really call it a weakness if you compare it to other teams. After all, in spite of our annual “WR weakness,” we somehow end up with another annual theme—being a top 10 offense in yards and (until last year) points scored. With a healthy TE corp, and guys like Lorenzo Booker + Tony Hunt getting more carries, I think the red zone problem (a strength every year until last year) will turn into a positive aspect of the offense.
