FoxSports.com's take on Eagles S Demps
I personally am really excited about Demps. He is cocky, but not to much, plays well, and is going to get training from one of the best in the league. This kid's got something bright happening in Philly.
Im not a big fan of Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com, but this article made me smile
"Five Day 2 picks you didn't hear much about ... that I liked,
1. ...
2. ...
3. ...
4. Quintin Demps, UTEP, S, 117th overall to Philadelphia: Maybe my favorite pick of the entire weekend, Demps — projected to go as high as the second round by some — fell all the way to 117th overall. Philadelphia passed on Kenny Phillips in the first round, assuming they could get a top safety down the road. Demps is undoubtedly that guy. Playing free safety at UTEP, he had 17 career interceptions — an impressive number for any player, let alone a safety. He can also hit. Let Brian Dawkins show him the ropes for a few years, and see Demps flourish into an outstanding pro.

Nice
I think Demps could be a great player for us too. I wish, however, that the same journalist hadn’t also written that Bryan Smith was a player that he did NOT like in the third round. A lot of people seem to be knocking that pick. Anyways, 17 picks is a lot…I wonder if they’re planning to potentially play him at corner?

Well then they obviously don't know the draft strategy of the Eagles
Who find guys out of colleges like McNeese St. and draft them while other teams are still picking out of the BCS crop of talent. They did draft Gocong out of Cal Poly, a somewhat unknown school in its own right. So, they have a type of strategy.

Right
They’ve definitely had a lot of success with guys from smaller schools. Westbrook, Gocong, Herremans, Cole…who knew?

I think demps can be a soild starter and maybe help with kick offs. the only problem is coming in after Dawk, anything less then a pro-bowler which i think Demps won’t be, will seem like a huge drop-off . in the fans eyes he may seem like a bust. when in fact he is an average starter which is what is in 98% of the league.

It’s unrealistic to expect a 4th round pick to be anymore than a solid starter. Heck, a solid starter is very good for a 4th round pick.

if your in the nfl you have a chance. look at trent cole, omar gaither, tom brady. pluss this is a draft that didnt have a run on safetys

All I said is expecting someone in the fourth round to be anything more than a starter is unrealistic. If they are expected to be a future hall of famer, they go earlier. It’s that simple. You’re drafted based on expected results.

you draft on more then that
you draft on availability of both their possition and other positions. plus how many juniors there are in the draft. and most of all needs.
this draft was costom fitted for a safties value to drop. you start off with the loiitle need for a number 1 safety around the league. add in a high need for linemen and the plethra of linemen available. look at the amount of recivers that are solid second rounders and the high need for a reciver in this league and cap it off with a record number of juniors and all of the sudden a safety who has 2nd rounder written all over him fall to the fourth to one of the 4 teams that needed a saftey.

None of that changes the fact that if a team REALLY expects a pro bowl caliber player, they’d draft him earlier than round 4.
