Eagles 53 Man Roster

A few of these guys won't make it (and will either end up on IR, be cut, or hit the practice squad), because it adds up to 5 men over 53, but I think this is the general picture of your 2008 Eagles.

QB (3) - McNabb, Kolb, Feeley

RB (4) - Westbrook, Buckhalter, Booker, Hunt

FB (2) - Klecko, Davis

WR (6) - Brown, Curtis, Avant, Baskett, Lewis, D. Jackson

OL (10) - Runyan, Andrews, Jackson, Jean-Gilles, Thomas, Justice, Herremanns, McGlynn, Mays, Dunlap

TE (3) - Smith, Celek, Wilson

DL (10) - Cole, Patterson, Bunkley, Thomas, Abiamiri, Reagor, Laws, Clemmons, Smith, Clark or Ramsey or Howard

LB (7) - Gaither, Gocong, Bradley, Jordan, Boiman, Mays, Studebaker

CB (5) - Samuel, Sheppard, Brown, Hanson, Graham, Ikegwuono (IR)

S (5) - Dawkins, Considine, Mikell, Reed, Demps

ST (3) - Akers, Rocca, Dorenbos

I'm excited to see some of the deadwood go from the bottom of the roster.

couple thoughts

saying five must go: here’s my five

1.Hunt/Buck/Booker (one of those guys is gone, and my bet is Hunt)... also is Moats gonna try for a spot again?

2.Baskett/Lewis (not sure those room for one of these guys either- hope we keep hank)

3.Davis (Have we ever kept two FBs? and this is hoping Klecko works out)
One of the bottom three OL’s

4.Graham

5. Darren Howard ( My bet is he doesnt even make it to camp)

Is it training camp yet?

Hunt/Buck/Booker

hunt is too young to give up on now, booker is also young and we traded for him its going to be Buck he does nothing anymore

buck avg’d 5 yrds a carry last year including being the one and only bright spot in the 16-3 loss to the giants in week 4 with 103 yds on the ground and 35 in the air

i could see them keeping 4 Rbs on the roster

Baskett/Lewis

lewis is gone, andy traded to get baskett a few years ago he doesnt want to give up on him yet

howard might be gone but dont forget about Reagor he didnt blow us away last year and we just drafted laws

dont forget a punter we have 2 punters now

Running Backs and Fullbacks

2004, the roster included:

RB Westbrook, Levens and Mahe
FB Ritchie/Parry and Tapeh

There certainly room to be flexible here, especially if Klecko can be used as a reserve Defensive Tackle.

Of course the real question will be to see if either Moats or Hunt has made any progress.

Howard

Howard is the reserve Long Snapper. Who takes that position if he goes? Celek or Wilson?

Heck, if I were going for flexibility, I’d dump Dorenbos, who I think is a waste of a roster spot, and make one of those guys the full-time long snapper.

The tackle we just drafted, McFlynn, is also a long snapper.

with pick up of law who can play both DT and DE, howard is good as gone. moats or hunt, one of them is gone for sure. lewis will be gone because hank is tall and we don’t need two small WRs. Klecko may stick around due to his versatility.

can’t wait ‘til training camp

The real question

If Lewis is gone, can we trade him to the Patriots for a 5th rounder?

I don’t know that Lewis is gone though. He plays gunner on special teams, not returner. So if Jackson replaces him as 5th wideout, who replaces him as gunner?

I’d think either Avant or Baskett would be gone. Those guys are virtual clones. Tall, slow, good hands, good blockers.

Why would Klecko be gone? They just signed him.

Seriously, how often do free agent signees get cut before they play? It’s not that often.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lose buck anyway...

I believe that after last seasons performance, buck has the chops to be a leading running back in this league. I know that not everyone agrees with that, but working out with Westbrook has paid off huge for him and he seems to run with the same style, but is more willing to take on defenders due to his strength. It wouldn’t surprise me if the pick up of running backs sets up his leaving to another team to vie for a starting position rather than as a backup/specialty back.

And Klecko has the ability to play multiple roles, something that is becoming much more coveted in this league as offensive schemes become more complex and coordinators push the envelope in their play design, so I see him as making this roster.

As with Hunt, I think he just needs to be given a chance, but on the plays that I have seen him run he doesn’t blow through openings in the line like Westbrook or Buckhalter, but I think that you can be taught that.

i’m not sure if hunt fits andy’s offense style. with picking up booker, it looks like the offense is going further away from running the ball. i think andy’s plan is going to backfire if he relies on mcnabb passing more to his running backs. he doesn’t have the accuracy to pass at 65% completion rate.

eagles should have a more balanced attack with 50/50 pass/run ratio rather than ~60/40

5 Cuts

Dorenbos (McGlynn partiall drafted for LS abilities)
Howard
Mays (Practice Squad)
Studebaker (Practice Squad)
Lewis

Lewis is sort of similar to DeSean… We can have a guy like Reed become Gunner. Or Baskett. Or Demps.

Studebaker + Mays are probably going to get squadded, because our DL and our LBs typically get squadded. Maybe Studebaker makes the team, in which case maybe a guy like King Dunlap will get squadded (being that we have 9 extremely versatile OLs)
