Chad Johnson says he's done in Cincy

Today in Chad Johnson news...
You can't get much clearer than this.
I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible. I don't intend on reporting to anything.

We also got a little preview of how ugly it could all get.

What spurred Johnson's immediate reaction was a statement made by quarterback Carson Palmer that indicated Johnson had told Palmer he would be at the team's mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Johnson said that wasn't true.

"I want to make this very clear,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals.'

Wednesday, the Pro Bowl wide receiver said he was surprised by Palmer's comments about his possibly reporting to mandatory camp.

"I wish he would stay out of my business,'' Johnson said.

Just in case Chad forgot, Palmer probably got his info from Chad himself who said he'd be at camp just a few weeks ago.

I know how much everyone wants a top flight WR, and Chad clearly is that, but do we really want to go down this road again? I'm not against bringing guys that aren't quite choir boys, but this is starting to get ridiculous.

I've said over and over again that Chad wouldn't be traded, but honestly I can't see how this situation gets resolved in Cincy. Both sides have drawn a line in the sand and now promised that they won't budge. Something has to give.

Saw this yesterday
I was almost sure he wouldnt get traded too but i dont see how they dont trade him now. He obviously wont play and they will be wasting money on the guy to sit at home. If you ask me, the bengals are being selfish by not trading him. They could get a guy like lito for him but instead insist on not trading him and having two number one recievers just like detroit. I think chad will be fine if he came here. I would like to see some trash talking because we dont have anyone on our team like that anymore. Who remembers the opening game of the season the year after we played in the superbowl when we huddled up and rallied on the falcons 50 yard line symbol? That was awesome.

Could they?
You say they could get a player like Lito for him. Could they?

That seems to be the mystery here. Would the Eagles even make an offer for him?

by JasonB on Apr 17, 2008 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why not
hes obviously a top wr and i dont care what banner says, lito is gone. He's just saying that they may keep lito to put more pressure on bidding teams to trade them a first rounder. How can you keep a player thats unhappy and you wont pay more. It makes sense since the bengals have a terrible defense and we need a number one wr. lito and maybe a 5th or 4th rounder sounds fair to me.

Cincy
Has spent 2 straight 1st round picks on corners... That has be part of the equation.

It's the Bengals
Their capacity for stupidity is nearly infinite.

To be fair
It's not like the other side in this little drama is a genius either...

It won't happen
before the draft. It looks like the Bengals are going to stand by there line until it makes more sense. The Bengals will take an $8.03 million salary cap hit if they traded or release Johnson before June 1st. I don't how that number changes after June 1st but one can only assume it will go down. Plus Chad is only due to make 3 mil (base) this year, would you rather pay a guy 3 mil to sit or pay out 8 mil to watch him star somewhere else.

No.
This is a ticking time bomb.

If they go for this, they must win the Superbowl in that first "honeymoon" year, because this is a TO-style implosion waiting to happen.

idk
this is really the first time that chad has ever been a pain in the ass to the team.  he's been fined for TD celebrations, but i don't have a real problem with that.  I really don't have a problem with him wanting to get out of Cincy as well.  it seems like they will never really make it, because their defense just can't get it together and they are hemorrhaging good players for various reasons.  henry is out because he can't stay out of jail, rudi johnson seems to be on his way down, palmer is playing like crap, and they lost the only decent backfield player on D.  i'd want out too.

i think the eagles should take him if they can.  he's def a loud player, but this is the first time he's been loud to the detriment of the team.

post from cincyjungle.com
here's a post from a member from the bungles fan site.  i'm not sure about the accuracy but it sounds pretty good.

from cincyjungle:
"The only thing that matters...
...is the amortized signing bonus. Roster, workout, etc. bonuses, salary, all that will NOT matter.

Per the go-bengals numbers, there is still about $13 million worth of signing bonuses to be written off. If Chad were to be cut/traded, that $13 million would accelerate and hit the cap in 2008. UNLESS the Bengals designate Chad as a "June 1" cut, which would allow the hit to be spread out over two years, $6.5 million in 2008 and again in 2009.

Now...all that has to be considered in light of the cap hit if the Bengals KEEP Chad. His cap number next year, adding a little to the go-bengals number, will be around $8 million.

So...if the Bengals cut/trade Chad, worst-case scenario is a NET cap hit of about $5 million -- in a year when the Benals are coming into the free agency period with something on the order of $28 million in cap space.

If they split the hit over 2 years as a June 1 cut, the Bengals will actually GAIN something like $1.5 million in cap space in 2008."

Bengals
Personally, I hope the Bengals stand firm on this like the Eagles did.

Johnson is an ass and with each word from his mouth he looks more foolish.   He makes unclear and nonsensical claims of mistreatment.

He signed a long-term deal, and he's paid well.  He's recognized as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, and until recently he was almost universally loved by fans.

Now he's a joke.  I hope, for the sake of the NFL, the Bengals make him sit the entire year.  Behavior like this shouldn't be rewarded.

Oh, and if you couldn't tell, I think the Eagles should stay far away from this one.

Chad
Well what have we got to lose? We were 8-8 last year. Would you prefer the Cowboys to get him? Also, I look at Chad's situation and it reminds of Corey Dillon. He was also deemed a "malcontent". Turns out he was fantastic in New England. Chad and Corey are just ultra-competitive guys. They want to win and Cincinnati wasn't/isn't the place for them. I personally would love to see Johnson on our team.

To lose?
Yeah, I would prefer the Cowboys get him if I had to make the choice.  I would love for the Ocho Cinco/TO/Romo/Simpson/Jerry Jones circus to kill that locker room.  Sign me up.

Well
I wouldn't want to have to cover TO, Johnson and Witten.

we should probably learn from our mistakes
i would love to have chad johnson on the team if he weren't going to be a pain in the ass, but what happens if we aren't winning?  we all said the same things about TO that it would be different in philly than it was in san francisco, but it wasn't.  granted this is the first time chad has been this big of a pain in the ass, but clearly he is capable of the same headaches that TO is.  i personally don't want another TO situation, and if we are to learn from our mistakes, the wise move here would have to be to stay away, in my opinion.

by eagleyosh on Apr 17, 2008 11:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

are you crazy
the reason TO was a problem was because of his contract and critism of McNabb. Saying he would cause problems if we werent winning is stupid. Do you honestly think we'll lost many games with Johnson in the offense. We'd have one of the best WR units in the league ontop of one of the best QBs and RBs. How do you gameplan for westbrook and johnson? it would be a nightmare for a defense. We would have a top 5 offense in the league easily.

I agree
it makes me mad that people are saying he will be another T.O. ... Terrible Owens is an ass he attacked teammates and was just flat out ridiculous. Chad has not said a bad thing about any of his teammates (save for telling Carson to stay out of his business). Chad wants to win, BFH said that he is recognized as one of the best WR's in the league but now is a joke. It would seem that no matter how good Chad is he wants to win a superbowl ... that is something that T.O. would never say. T.O. is all about his stats when we lost the superbowl he only talked about how well he played. "Ocho Cinco" does not equal "The Player".

Hmm...
I think you both are being pretty naive.

Johnson has taken his circus around the country, screaming at anyone who will listen that he has been mistreated and he bad-mouthing the team that pays him.

Chad Johnson is only interested in promoting Chad Johnson.

This is a guy who tried to put his self-created nickname on the back of his jersey.  That was self-promotion.

This is guy who raced a horse.  Self-promotion.

This is a guy who wore a coat on the sidelines with "Future H.O.F." on the back -- self-promotion.

This is a guy who has an entire rack of gold-teeth -- self-promotion.

Chad Johnson only says the word "Super Bowl" in the context of his own greatness.

Watch carefully now, as Carson Palmer is questioned by the press if what he said was untrue.  If Carson is wise, he will say "no comment."  If he's not, the war of words is on and  Ocho-Cinco will be attacking him with fervor.

Chad Johnson is not a professional.  He's a circus act.  We've had a circus act.  If you want it again, then so bet it.  But don't claim he's something else.

Does anybody know,
What would happen if the Eagles and Bengals both redid both Lito's and Chad's contracts? Why not just say to Chad ok you want to be traded? Good rework your deal and we will trade you to the team that could give us the most for you?

Like a sign and trade in the NBA

If he had a different contract wouldn't the numbers be different?

I can't see this happening though, I can still dream though....

Nope
Doesn't really work like that in the NFL.
