SB Nation Mock draft round one is done

The first round of SBNation's 2nd annual bloggers mock draft has concluded and I have to say I'm very proud of the job the guys in the network have done. I think the picks have been solid, the analysis very good, and the presentation top notch. If you haven't been following it over on Mocking the Draft I strongly suggest you check it out.

Round 2 has begun and the Eagles will pick at #49. Like last time, when our pick draws closer I'll open it up to community for suggestions. Without knowing who exactly will be there, I'll be looking at the secondary and offensive line.

In case you've missed any of the mock, the links to the explanations and analysis for the entire first round are after the jump. As always your comments/criticisms are welcome. Who made the best picks? The worst?

I'm dumb
I meant to say draft Otah

I'm just not a fan
I honestly don't know where all the hype is coming from for him. I think he has more questions about him than people are talking about.

I think he's more suited to play OG in the NFL.

I hate to say this
but I have to agree with the guys over at profootballtalk.comand Gholston going number 2 is completely foolish. This kid looks amazing in workouts but nothing about his play had anyone talking about him during the season. Some guys can be flat out physically talented but not great players. I use my friend as a loose example strongest most fit kid I know but pick him to play on your team in any sport and prepare to be disappointed.
GHOLSTON THIS YEAR'S MAMULA?

Posted by Mike Florio on April 11, 2008, 3:09 p.m. There's no denying the impressive physique and workout numbers that have been posted by Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston. But some league insiders are concerned that Gholston might be this year's Mike Mamula. Mamula, you might remember, was a defensive end who rocketed up the draft board based on incredible pre-draft numbers. The Boston College product made it all the way to No. 7 in 1995, jumping past guys like Joey Galloway and Warren Sapp and Hugh Douglas and Ty Law. But Mamula was a bust as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, and he has long since been out of the league. As to Gholston, a league source tells us Gholston simply isn't memorable when watching game film. As the thinking goes, if he were a dominant player at the college level, he would be showing up in the thick of things on a continuous basis. Per the source, he simply doesn't. We've recently heard that the Raiders could be targeting Gholston with the No. 4 overall selection. But plenty of league insiders don't see him being a top-five selection.

I think the Dolphins got a steal
with the first pick of the 2nd round when they got Otah. And as the blogger puts it at Mocking the Draft: "Otah was a value selection as well". I can understand your point Jason, but Ive just been brainwashed by Andy's draft history. Personally I like Otah, and I see the Eagles taking him with #19, and a WR in the 2nd round. That might well be a switch around from what I think will happen with our mock draft - you took a WR in the first, and I suspect you will take an OL in the 2nd. I know very little about college football, but it just feels like the Eagles will do it like that.
The NFC East goes through Philly.

I'm not a big fan of Otah
and I wouldn't like to take him at #19, but in the 2nd? Sure.

I just think he's more likely to be a guard in the NFL.

Gholston
Does this sound like a guy who can't play?

2007: Finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation's premier defensive end...All-Big Ten Conference first-team choice by the league's coaches and media...Started twelve games at the "Leo" (rush end) position, coming off the bench vs. Purdue...Guided a unit that led the nation in total defense (233.0 ypg), scoring defense (12.77 ppg), pass defense (150.15 ypg) and finished third in rushing defense (82.85 ypg)...Gholston ranked tied for third in the nation, as he set ther school season-record with fourteen sacks for minus 111 yards...His 15.5 stops for losses of 113 yards led the team and ranked eighth in the conference...Also had one fumble recovery that he advanced 25 yards for a touchdown...Made just three plays vs. the pass, but on 35 running plays directed at him, the opposition was held to minus 41 yards (-1.17 ypc)...

Yeah, he's no Mamula
Gholston was a top 10 pick before the combine. He's hardly a "workout warrior." His impressive pre draft measurables only confirm what we've seen him do on the field.
