Got a question for Andrew

Hey man.  You're the resident stat guru here, so you'd be the best source of info for me.  I have a theory here that I'd like to explore for the game this weekend, but I need some very specialized stats to look into it.  Do you know where I could look to find stats on defense based on alignment?  For example, say I wanted to see what the Eagles give up in YPC when they are in 4-3 versus Dime...  Now I realize that some of this leads to small sample size, but I'll address that concern when I get there.  Conversely, do you know where I could find offensive stats by alignment.  For example can I find out how many times the Birds run the ball out of a SplitBack formation, 4 WR Set, Shotgun, etc.?  I'm not too sure about any resource that would provide such data and I'd like to have some statistics to back up my theory... rather than just throw out a, "Well, this makes sense to me" article.

Thanks man.

I have another question for Andrew

I was looking at CBS Sportsline and how the Bears have told Orton that his job is not secure. This also came up in the article. What do you think are the chances of this happening. Anyone?

One who might be out there is Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb, a Chicago native with an expiring contract, although he has said he would rather get a new deal than play for a new team.

Who wants to play Leapfrog with Trent?

I think they publish this article every year for the past three years… it’s always McNabb to Chicago… Before the Cowboys game, I thought there was an 85% chance McNabb returns next year… Now that we’re in the playoffs, I would say it’s close to 100% that he’s back

But T.O. and his sideline histrionics wear on a quarterback. He's like the hot stripper you tried to clean up and convert into a real girlfriend. It's a lot of fun until the moment she has her second drink while out to eat with your parents. You unravel quicker than she does.

Yeah, Lurie was just handin’ out new contracts during that game.

I don’t recall him seeing him (and even Banner) down on the sidelines like that.

I don’t want him to turn into Jerry Jones or anything, but it was cool that the owner of the team looked as excited about the win as I was. (He was also probably happy that I bought another Eagles hat.)

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

well when you're up 38 points the game is already over

why not go down to the field

If you can't sell out a playoff game, should you lose the right to have a home game?

I have to agree with Foos

this is the same old song and dance. McNabb is from Chicago, they have needed a QB for a long time it just makes for some fun shit to write I guess. Expiring contract? I think not, he’s locked in through 2013.

+1 on the non-expiring contract… in fact, we have less financial risk by holding onto him as long as possible at this stage of his contract, which is why he wants it restructured

Damn Foos

Just read your response to the post over on the Viks blog. Way to call the poster out on what he said. Also good job throwing some stats at them. It will be interesting to read the response.

Hey Foos

Yeah, I just saw that response to the point I made. I was just trying to point out that writing a post explaining to NFL coaches how to counter blitzes is retarded. They got all uppity. Thanks for getting my back.

I said it over there and I'll say it here (Vikes fan BTW)

Highlighting one word in a sentence and disproving it is hardly a deep discussion and certainly isn’t difficult to accomplish.

Having said that, the OP was technically incorrect on a few things but I don’t think he expected his words to be picked apart to that degree.

It’s also worth noting that non of the Norseman “stat gurus” have gotten involved in that discussion. It’s my opinion that statistics can be manipulated to a degree that makes most of them completely irrelevant.

All things considered, these teams are pretty much playing themselves. Very good defenses and feast or famine offenses. It comes down to a couple things thayt have nothing to do with statistics. Who come out of the gate quickest. Which offense is forced to become one dimensional.

I don’t need any statistics to say that with absolute confidence.

by Miidwest on Dec 31, 2008 1:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

True

All things considered, it’s going to be a good game. I don’t think too many people on either side are expecting a blow out.

You’d have to buy a membership to STATS Inc. for a lot of that information.

Footballoutsiders.com may have some of what you want for a lot less in their premium database. I’d suggest emailing Aaron Schatz and asking him specifically what kind of information similar to what you want exists in there. They publish some summary statistics in their Pro Football Prospectus each year.

Mostly, to get that information on your own you need to chart games, which is tedious, but not impossible with the view given by the TV cameras, but much easier with coaches tape.

Certain somewhat obscure information can be derived from the play-by-play published by the NFL and the various sports channels on line. For example, the play-by-play notes which plays occur out of the shotgun, on which plays the QB is hit and knocked tot he ground but not sacked (the player hitting the QB is in [brackets]), how deep the pass is thrown (under 5 yards is short, 5 to 15 yards is medium, over 15 yards is deep). On a number of passes with long runs after the catch the play by play may note where the pass is caught, but this is not consistently done. If you want to gather up all the running plays out of shotgun, for example, you could cut and paste each play by play log into Excel, run a text to coulmns function on the data and sort the data into its proper columns, tag each play line by team, and then sort out all the eagles offensive and defensive plays by things like down and distance, shotgun formation, score, ball carrier, etc.
