reason #1 why reid must be fired, and NOW

his job, head coach of the 2009 philadelphia eagles would be the biggest and most desirable job opening of the decade.  the only three that would come close would be when tony dungee took over the colts, when jon gruden took over the bucs, and when mike tomlin took over the steelers.

you might ask why this job would be the most desirable, and you might ask why is it vital that this switch is made this offseason, and i'd answer by listing the following:

  • this team is currently two games over .500 while underachieving terribly - it's not going to take much to turn it around and finish with a 12 win season.
  • this team has two first round draft picks - any coach who takes over in 2009 will immediately be able to imprint his face with these selections.
  • this team has 2 franchise quarterbacks -  someone is gonna have to choose which one will be the face of the future for THIS franchise, and someone is gonna have to take the reins and decide how to deal with the other guy.
  • this team has two high valued assets under favorable contracts who want out.  maybe a new coach could bring lito or omar back under the tent, but if not, either could bring a nice haul of draft picks without really losing any production.

with all of this, there has not been a better situation for any coach to walk into and succeed in this entire decade.

now is the time for a move to be made.

change what?

trading lito wouldn’t affect the team, since he couldn’t touch the field in the last 8 weeks.
trading omar wouldn’t affect the team since they’ve already got his replacement.
drafting 2 first rounders could only add to this team’s talent. they might make the wrong pick, but it’s still a positive addition to the talent base.

oh, and detroit has a sinkhole for an owner. jeffrey lurie, for all his faults, has been quite great.

i don’t think there’s any chance of a new coach coming in and pulling a linehan, simply because there’s so much talent around him in the front office and on the coaching staff.

When they should be sacrifice bunting, they are buying effeminate designer jeans. When they should be fouling off pitches, they are masturbating. Always, they are masturbating.

they might make the wrong pick, but it’s still a positive addition to the talent base.

does that make sense???? wouldnt the wrong pick mean NOT adding/improving talent on the roster?

wow...

sorry for so many posts, but are you serious? Each time i read this i pick out another contradiction.
“i don’t think there’s any chance of a new coach coming in and pulling a linehan, simply because there’s so much talent around him in the front office and on the coaching staff.”
so then why change the head coach? he obviously has “so much talent around him.” Your entire POINT to this post was to FIRE Andy, and then you go and devalue the entire head coach position.

by the way

if Herm Edwards was out of KC wat do u think of him commin over here 2 us as Reids replacement???

hire a coach who got fired by the jets and then proceded to pick in the top 10 of the draft each year he was at kansas city. hire a coach whos team will likely finish the season with 2 wins this year. with all of reid’s issues…id take him over herm edwards.

Herm Edwards will be fired after this season and will rightfully take his place on coors light commercials shouting “you play to win the game!!”

I like Herm...

…as a man and former Eagle. But he hasn’t had a lot of success in KC.

by ajay on Dec 22, 2008 8:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't help but enjoy his presence.

As the star of “The Miracle at The Meadowlands” it’s hard to not like Herm, that said he is a defensive coach and in all honesty we have the best D Coach in the league we need an offensive head coach. I would like to mention I’m in the Keep Andy Camp.

Whodie

I didn’t know you were in the Keep Andy Camp. I could’ve sworn you wanted him out.

by ajay on Dec 22, 2008 10:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah I'm a fan.

I think you have to stick with good coaches through the rough patches, teams that constantly switch coaches generally don’t do well. I like Andy, do I think he can do things better or differently yes, but I think we are lucky we have a coach with some consistency.

Hmm

But it’s just the things he won’t change that kill me. I could see him being here for another 10 years and still (in 2018) having clock management issues and passing 80% of the time in critical games.

by ajay on Dec 22, 2008 10:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

haha no ones perfect.

I definitely agree he has to make some changes, but I’m not ready to give up on him.

I too like Edwards as a person, but I do not want him as a head coach.

I really don’t like recycling head coaches. These would be my ideas:

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2008/11/25/670723/who-do-you-replace-andy-re#comments

If they do keep Reid, which I believe they will, I’d keep a close eye on Jeff Davison of the Panthers. If Reid were to go this year, I’d hire Pioli as GM from the Patriots and McDaniel as the head coach.

they have a GM

by variablesdont on Dec 22, 2008 10:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I see the current GM as part of the problem as well.

I think Pioli would be an upgrade over Tom Heckert. I think Heckert could be in trouble after this season.

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on Dec 22, 2008 10:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

really?

the 2008 draft yielded desean jackson and quentin demps. it also netted future stalwarts joe mays, jack ikegwuonu, king dunlap, bryan smith, and trevor laws.

i’d say tom heckert is absolutely vital to the long term success of the franchise.

you know andy is the one that makes draft decisions right?

But T.O. and his sideline histrionics wear on a quarterback. He's like the hot stripper you tried to clean up and convert into a real girlfriend. It's a lot of fun until the moment she has her second drink while out to eat with your parents. You unravel quicker than she does.

by foos05 on Dec 23, 2008 7:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm under that belief that Reid makes those decisions.

Some of the people on this board argue that the main problem is the players are not producing. I agree that is a big part of the problem. If they players on this team aren’t good enough, wouldn’t it stand to reason that you need a person who can pick better players?

I do agree that the Eagles are not the worst drafting team in the league. But, I do think they can do better. I think they are in the middle of the pack. I agree the have made a lot of good picks like Bradley, Westbrook, DeSean Jackson, etc, etc…. But they have also picked guys like Freddie Mitchell, Winston Justice, L J Smith, Matt McCoy, Jerome McDougal (we can argue if his failure was because of injury or he was a bad pick.) Also, there have been some free agency moves (Kearse, Clemmons) and a trade like Lorenzo Booker that haven’t worked out as expected. Does a better GM also prevent problems like the lack of a punt returner or legitimate fullback or blocking tight end from happening?

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on Dec 23, 2008 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

iight

idk i see him maybe as a strickter more Parcells/Cower like coach that might take this team by the collar and pull em up, plus, he’d have a chip on his shoulder and id rather him have those 2 picks and the desicion to make on this team that most others out there if reid were 2 go

he's two years removed from being taken in the second round

and as of yet, he’s not been put in a situation where it was possible for him to succeed.

he may be a franchise QB. he may not be. i don’t know yet, but i do know it’s far too soon to write him off.

Really?

So AJ Feeley wasn’t put in a position to succeed at San Francisco in 2002 or hosting Miami in 2007? How did he do it then?

by Andrew B on Dec 22, 2008 10:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

if you think that facing BAL’s Defense in the first regular season game of kolb’s career, after a half in which they decimated the eagles’ offense to the point that reid yanked his starting QB of 10 fucking years was a situation in which kolb was likely to succeed, let alone a situation that was comparable to facing miami’s or san francisco’s defense in either of those years, well, if you think that, then i’d have to call you something stronger than a functional retard.

Stick with fatso

I hear people say they want Cower but the only difference between Cower and Reid is one Super Bowl win. Granted thats big but would it really be that big of an upgrade? The Steelers and Cower are the model we should follow – holding on to a good coach.

i disagree with this post......

I hate hearing people say that Kolb hasnt had a chance. Really? Sure this year he has been put into “tough spots.” He’s also come in against the Browns and stunk it up. BUT past all of that….he played in pre-season. He played in camp. He practices everyday. Has anyone on the team called for McNabbs head? Wide receivers are among the biggest mouths in the NFL, and i certainly havent heard anyone asking for Kolb. The guy has no real NFL PLAYING time…but he’s had opportunity to impress. You can chose any young and highly drafted (Rd 1 or 2) QB and expect him to be the next Tom Brady. Thats why you draft him, right?
Dont hang your hat on this post. It’s easy to create winning combinations in text. On paper, I think that I would be a better coach and win the superbowl every year. In fact, i think i could be the NFL’s first actively playing NFL coach. I would win rookie of the year, coach of the year, season mvp and superbowl mvp.

this post really irked me. i am posting again.

USUALLY….new coach = new system and new players to fit that system. I am not convinced that our coach and players are incapable. Its not been a coaching issue that our players dropped the balls. Coaches “put players in position.” It looked to me like Djax was in position. He ran the route, blocking on the line held up, the ball was delivered, the catch wasnt made. BOOM, woulda been a tie game. What could Andy or Marty, OR anyone else have done there??? Should we have not drafted DJax? If that were your point, then i would have understood your point. Since i know that it is not (and it would have been a toally moronic statement) i strongly disagree.

Lito will not be happy in Philly unless he gets a new contract. thats why he’s caused issues in the past. Its likely why he isnt playing as much as he wants to. Stating that Lito is in a “favorable” contract is only correct from one side of the table. The Eagles. Would your new coach give Lito the raise that he feels he deserves??? Past that…. I would actually consider Lito to be less valuable this year than he was last year. The guy ISNT PLAYING. Is a year older. Injury prone. And showed a negative side early this year by demanding a new contract.

I dont think you proved anything in your post. You picked 4 debatable issues and decided that firing Andy would resolve all of them.

12 wins?

“this team is currently two games over .500 while underachieving terribly – it’s not going to take much to turn it around and finish with a 12 win season”

That’s not good enough.

There have been 70 teams with 11 wins in the NFL since 1978, just 8 made the Super Bowl and only 3 won the Super Bowl. There have been 54 teams with 12 wins in the, just 13 made the Super Bowl (24%) and only 7 won it. Its no surprise that when the Eagles pulled off 11 and 12 wins twice each under Reid, it wasn’t good enough to even make it past the NFC Championship game, because 3 times out of 4, a 12 win team doesn’t make it past the Championship Round, and 9 time out of 10, an 11 win team doesn’t make it past the Championship Round.

To really have a shot at a Lombardi trophy, you need 13+ wins.

28 teams have had 13 win seasons since 1978, 13 went to the Super Bowl (46), 6 won it. 17 teams have had 14 win season since 1978, 11 went to the Super Bowl (65), 7 won it. 5 teams have had 15 or 16 win seasons, 3 went to the Super Bowl (60%), 2 won it. 28 seasons of play, 50 teams with 13+ wins, 27 Super Bowl appearances, 15 Lombardi trophy hoistings. Not surprisingly at all, when we hit 13 wins in 2004, we went to the Super Bowl.

So the question is, what do we have to do to regain the dominant form of 2004? Otherwise we are just farting in the wind and hoping luck breaks our way.

I’d say the mark of the 2004 team was consistency. That team didn’t drop passes, didn’t miss easy interceptions, pressured the QB up the middle and got the sacks instead of just missing, ran the ball well. This 2008 team can do most of that, but can’t do it consistently. Until they can, we are going to be frustrated.
