Sunday football open thread
There's two major matchups of interest to Eagles fans today. The big one is Tampa Bay at the Atlanta Falcons. A Falcon loss today is all the Eagles need to regain full control over their own destiny. If Atlanta loses and the Eagles win out they absolutely will be in the playoffs.
So, go Bucs!
The other game of interest is of course the Sunday night division battle in Dallas between the Cowboys and Giants. The Eagles don't need Dallas to lose since a win over them in week 17 would vault them over the Cowboys if both teams win out, but still a little breathing room is always nice. A loss by Dallas would drop them to 8-6 and behind the Eagles in the wildcard race. The Eagles would also take over second place in the NFC east.
So, go Giants!

Playoff Implications Create Strange Bedfellows
I can’t believe I have to root for the Bucs…
And I can’t wait to watch the post-game interviews if Dallas loses tonight.
I find it a little less distasteful to root for the Bucs than I used to because of Garcia.
And as for Giants-Cowboys, I think I Giants’ win, especially if TO only has a handful of catches, sets off the TO-plosion. Tick Tick Tick…BOOM.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.
Around here...
They keep promoting this DC-Baltimore synergy in which the tv stations always air the other’s games. Hence, Baltimore’s Fox 45 will be showing Skins-Bungles instead of a good game like Tampa/Atlanta. Likewise, DC CBS Ch. 9 will always show Ravens instead of showing a better game. Luckily, Steelers/Ravens is a ‘good’ game – at least from a standpoint of records; I think it will be ugly. So I get to decide at 1 between Wsh/Cin or Buff/NYJ.
What a choice.

On what I think was one of the best play-action bootleg sells I have ever seen. All 11 Redskins were going to the RB while the QB just ran around to the end zone untouched.

Skins give up a 79 yard screen pass and then a 15 yard fade pattern to The Criminal Chris Henry.

since nobody's participating
over on Big Blue View, and I figure we share mutual dislike of the Redskins, allow me to say that they look awful. What the hell happened to Portis, who was carrying my fantasy team early on! Oh well, they’re gonna lose to the Bengals and be pretty much eliminated from playoff contention, and all those asses I go to school with (I’m in law school in DC) will finally be shut up.
Have lived around DC...
…for now about 20 years (although I am now technically closer to Baltimore in this little ‘vortex’ between the two cities). I loathe them and hope they lose every week. Zorn will be fired if the Skins don’t make it.

Bigger problem is that Atlanta’s only got Minnesota left away. They get a supersoft game for last game of the year against StL at home.
Yours wouldn’t be the only one. Their fans wouldn’t be able to handle it. ‘This is what a win feels like??’ -Explosion-

I actually think tampa could lose to san diego next week if they keep this up…
GOD DAMNN ..Get in Damitt!
I hate having to rely on another teams charity to make it into the playoffs….
scenarios involving eagles winning out
Dallas and Wash are out of the Eagles’ way if Eagles win out no matter what, so things not under their control would be…
Carolina would have to lose all three remaining games (denver, at giants, at NO)
IF TB loses today, they would have to lose one to SD or Oakland.
IF Atl wins today, they would have to lose one to Minn or StL.
IF TB wins today/ATL loses today, the Eagles control their own destin
as an addendum to that, carolina would have to lose all three games left while TB or ATL (but not both) would have to go 11-5 and win the division. If both TB and ATL go 11-5, eagles are screwed
.....like i said
I hate having to rely on another teams charity to make it into the playoffs….
but,
What would December Eagles football be without it……
by E_A_G_L_E_S! on Dec 14, 2008 2:33 PM EST up reply actions
Well, charity case yes, but even if Atl wins today, there are 4 chances for the eagles to go ahead .of Atl or the Bucs, and the odds of them winning all 4 games isn’t that great in the NFL.
Atlanta’s been wildly inconsistent this year against better teams in the NFL, and TB will miss Garcia and Earnest Graham.
17-10 Cincy
The Bungles lapsed into prevent to allow DC back into the game.
The Sports Wilderness - Sports With An Enemies List!
I’d like to point out that all of Washington’s wins were extremely close even against Detroit and Cleveland, and highly dependent on the run game to control the clock. Teams adjusted to Campbell and Portis and Washington hasn’t figured it out. Add coaching breakdown in the last week or so, and you have a recipe for disaster.
This team was overhyped.
I will certainly be slowing down to turn my head and stare.

Yeah that last week
looks pretty bad right now.
Minnesota should/can beat Atlanta next week, but they’re still a team that could lay a stinker at any or all opportunities. San Diego has been a huge disappointment — but holy crap! they just scored two touchdowns in the last 1 1/2 min. against KC. Maybe that’ll wake them up?!? (Though I can just see the Bucs going back home and righting the ship over the last two weeks.)
Chargers
wow holy comeback they could win this game still, and if Den loses to CAR then SD is still alive for playoffs and thus that much more motivated next week.

There aren’t many QBs who fumble as much as Tony Romo, either, John.

Right now, who would be the SB favorite?
Can’t be the Giants.
Can’t be the Titans.
Carolina?
Steelers?
This is the most wide open I’ve seen the NFL in a long time.
If the Eagles make it as a 5 or 6 seed, they would have to win at places like Minnesota or Arizona in the first round and then NY or Carolina in the second. That’s not daunting at all.
Let’s just hope they get in because they’ll have a shot. I think the chances of Atlanta and TB going a combined 4-0 the rest of the way is highly unlikely.
Why not the Titans?
A loss to Houston is rough, but they’d be my favorite. But I agree with your more general point – the NFL is really wide open. And why not the Eagles?
The Titans have Kerry Collins at QB
And their best defensive player, Albert Haynesworth, got his knee rolled today.
