Path to the Playoffs
Now that the Eagles have put themselves firmly behind the 8-ball with their 6-5-1 record, here's a look at their path to the playoffs. They are #11 in the conference right now, so they are desperate for some losses from so head-to-head match-ups from the teams ahead of them. The screwiest thing though, is that if the Giants lost out, and the Eagles won out, they could actually still win the division. How bizzarre is that?
Panthers (8-3) - @ Packers, Bucs, Broncos, @ Giants, @ Saints - Only the home game with the Broncos looks like a definite win, but they should be favored against the Saints as well. The Bucs destroyed the Panthers the first time around. The Panthers also struggled with the Lions and Bears and got their ass kicked by the Vikings, which means @ Packers may not be as easy as it should be this Sunday. Every loss by the Panthers is a boost to the Eagles this year and in the future. Go Pack!
Bucs (8-3) - Saints, @ Panthers, @ Falcons, Chargers, Raiders - not an easy front to the end of the season for the Bucs, but the last two games do look like wins. The Bucs narrowly lost to the Saints in the Superdome, but destroyed the Panthers and Falcons at home. Still, they should come out of this 11-5 minimum, and a win of the division. The Eagles are best off with either them winning the division and knocking off the three NFC South teams in front of us.
Cowboys (8-4) - @ Steelers, Giants, Ravens, @ Eagles - that's a pretty scary schedule for them - they could actually lose out, and no one would be that shocked. Its easy to see them at 8-6 three weekends from now.
Redskins (7-4) - Giants, @ Ravens, @ Bengals, Eagles, @ 49ers - the 49ers seem like a certain win, the Bengals may very well beat them given how they played the rest of the NFC East, and nothing else is easy on the schedule. The Eagles are helped by a Giants win this weekend, so go Big Blue!
Falcons (7-4) - @ Chargers, @ Saints, Bucs, @ Vikings, Rams - well, they should definitely win the last one! There is no telling what may happen with the rest of this schedule before that last game. They might win three, or they might lose all four. This weekend, go Bolts!
Saints (6-5) - @ Bucs, Falcons, @ Bears, @ Lions, Panthers - again, only one guaranteed win - the Lions game. The Saints have historically and especially this year sucked on the road (1-4 so far). That makes @ Bucs and @ Bears almost certain losses. Hosting the Panthers is probably not going to go well for them either. An 8-8 finish would not be a surprise. Hooray for Pirates on Sunday - a Bucs win puts us back ahead of the Saints.
Bears (6-5) - @ Vikings, Jaguars, Saints, Packers, @ Texans - that's actually a pretty favorable schedule, but the best part of it for Eagles fans is the probable loss this weekend in the Metrodome. Lets all cheer for Chilly this weekend. We need the Bears to start losing.
Vikings (6-5) - Bears, @ Lions, @ Cardinals, Falcons, Giants. The two wins to start the remainder of the season should be followed by a loss in the desert. Hosting the Falcons is a toss-up, though we would best be served by a Falcons loss to keep them moving down the ladder. Seeing Eli Manning implode, again, against the Vikings defense would be fun for Week 17.
Packers (5-6) - Panthers, Texans, @ Jaguars, @ Bears, Lions. The Pack is behind us, so as long as we keep winning, they can't catch up with this relatively easy schedule. Texans and Lions should both be wins.
Eagles (6-5-1) - @ Giants, Browns, @ Redskins, Cowboys - we need to win out. Period. Even then, its possible that there will be two (or more) 11-5 teams from the NFC East and NFC South who are not the division winners.
Right now, the Eagles are best served by the Giants, Cardinals, and Bucs continuing to win (after the Giants lose to us next weekend). So we really need some losses by the Cowboys, Redskins, Panthers, and Falcons. In the NFC North, it would be better if the Vikings and Packers both continued to win. The Packers can't catch up without us losing again and them winning, while the Vikings winning means losses for the Bears and Falcons.
Here's the head-to-head match-ups.
Week 13 - Saints @ Bucs, Bears @ Vikings, Panthers @ Packers
Week 14 - Falcons @ Saints, Bucs @ Panthers
Week 15 - Saints @ Bears, Bucs @ Falcons
Week 16 - Packers @ Bears, Falcons @ Vikings
Week 17 - Panthers @ Saints
A perfect outcome to the rest of the weekend would be wins by the Bucs, Vikings, and Packers, along with a win by the Giants. Pretty much no matter what though, the fact that someone is going to lose in those 10 games is going to really help the Eagles.

idk id say maybe 75-80 percent just b/c we need lots of help from other teams plus a relatively tough schedule, but does anyone remember ’06 when we had to play Skins Giants and Cowbitches all in a row and everyone was like omg w/out MacNabb were screwed…de-javu???

Well, too bad
Carolina came back to win today. It looks like the Iggles best hope, given that both Tampa Bay and Carolina are 9-3 now, is for the Cowboys, with their tough schedule, to stumble and end up, at best 10-6. And of course, we also need Atlanta to finish no better than 10-6.
And the Iggles still have to win at the Giants, at the Skins, and on 12/28 against the boys. Hard to be too optimistic going into the Meadowlands next week with the Giants clearly in full gear.

ur exactly right
the eagles have to win out…all scenarios I’m thinking of is assuming that will happen…
eagles fans have to hope that dallas loses to the steelers, ravens or giants. I think that is definitely reasonable.
we also have to hope that Atlanta drops a game against the rams, vikings, bucs or saints. I also think that’s reasonable.
we play washington…so they’ll have 6 losses assuming we beat them.
I’d like the final playoff seeds to be:
1) giants
2) bucs
3) cardinals
4) bears
5) panthers
6) eagles….
If the Eagles win out, at 10-5-1, we are AHEAD of any 10-6 or 6-loss team.
I don’t know, it’s all pretty crazy.

Some good, some bad
The teams at the bottom lost like we hoped – Bears and Saints. Both are now behind us at 6-6. The Redskins also lost, and are at 7-5, allowing us to leapfrog them with a victory in three weeks.
Unfortunately, the Falcons and Panthers both took care of business and now have significant leads on anything the Eagles might hope to accomplish.
Bucs (9-3) – @ Panthers, @ Falcons, Chargers, Raiders. Them beating the Panthers next week would really help.
Panthers (9-3) – Bucs, Broncos, @ Giants, @ Saints – Game next week is probably for the division, and the Bucs should be favored. But then we could use the Giants to pull through and beat them in Week 16 too, as well as a win by either the Broncos or the Saints. They’ve really put us in a tough spot, and have essentially sown up either the #2 or #5 seed.
Falcons (8-4) – @ Saints, Bucs, @ Vikings, Rams – The road win at the Chargers really hurt. We need them to lose two games and us to win out. Hopefully the Bucs and Vikings can take care of business. I think the Saints may be toast.
Cowboys (8-4) – @ Steelers, Giants, Ravens, @ Eagles – one can only hope that they lose out. Right now, they are two up on us, so even us beating them in Week 17 wouldn’t get us into the playoffs. They need to lose at least one other game.
Vikings (7-5) – @ Lions, @ Cardinals, Falcons, Giants – won as expected. Let me repeat that seeing Eli Manning implode, again, against the Vikings defense would be a lot of fun for Week 17, and will set just the right tone for the Giants entering the playoffs. That game would go down similar to what we saw tonight. Vikings can shut down Jacobs and can torture Elisha.
Redskins (7-5) – @ Ravens, @ Bengals, Eagles, @ 49ers – hopefully this game was harbinger of them circling down the toilet towards an 8-8 finish.
Eagles (6-5-1) – @ Giants, Browns, @ Redskins, Cowboys – Notice how far down the list we are, no thanks to the Chargers and Packers. We need to win out. Period. Even then, its possible that there will be two (or more) 11-5 teams from the NFC East and NFC South who are not the division winners. We need some choking to start by the Falcons and Cowboys, pronto. We are way too far gone to catch the Panthers (or Bucs), I’m afraid. Once again, the Bears loss is looking like a season killer.
Saints (6-6) – Falcons, @ Bears, @ Lions, Panthers – Stick a fork in them. Its over.
Bears (6-6) – Jaguars, Saints, Packers, @ Texans – Way to choke away the division, Orton. That was just pathetic tonight. They are done too. Might as well lose out at this point and improve their draft pick.
Packers (5-7) – Texans, @ Jaguars, @ Bears, Lions – amazing that they could put on an even more pathetic display that the Bears, and choke away a lead at home in the final two minutes. They are just not very good and should now fade out.
Overall, I’m pretty pessimistic right now.

Key games next week besides Eagles @ Giants
Bucs @ Panthers, Redskins @ Ravens, Falcons @ Saints and Cowboys @ Steelers.
Wins by the Bucs, Ravens, Saints, and Steelers would be just tremendous. I’m not very confident the Saints can do it though.

3rd Place vs. 4th Place
Could be getting scheduled the Seahawks and Packers, vs. getting scheduled the Rams and Lions next year. If we are going to miss the playoffs, I’d rather get the 4th place schedule. The rest of our schedule will be the NFC South and the AFC West.

andrew, good post
i think i’m already nervous that the Birds have to win out – it just sucks that it has come down to this. but i’m confident in the steelers handling the ‘boys, ravens to get the Redskins (Campbell struggled a bit) – and for the Saints to win – (they’re coming off a tough loss)
basically, i just want every team to get to the 6-loss threshold – whether on their own or through playing us – because if we win out – we’ll be ahead of all of them -
if everything goes according to plan – we could be in the #6 spot, not by next week, but by week 15 at 8-5-1

Basically if the Eagles win out they would ensure themselves of being ahead of all but (CAR, TB, ATL, DAL) They would leapfrog Washington, and ARZ and MIN would win their divisions. Either CAR or TB wins the South and assume the other one takes one of the wildcards. That would leave Atlanta and Dallas as the competition for the last spot, and they both need to lose 2 games to get to 6 losses. We can give DAL one of those in week 17.
It boils down to this, DAL needs to lose one game to NYG, PIT, or BAL and ATL needs to lose two of their last 4….The only other hope is a collapse from TB or CAR.
The bottom line is the Eagles need some help even if they win out, so if they get to 9-6-1 it looks all but impossible.

Just a hunch...
that Dallas/Eagles game at the linc the last week of the season is going to be HUGE!!!!
Its pretty much guaranteed that one if not both teams will be fighting for a must win to get in the playoffs…
I get goosebumps thinking about the possibility of a “play in” game against them… in Philly, in late late December :)
