the plan to rebuild

While i would much better have had one of the various OL choices last year, or Felix Jones, or Kenny Phillips, we have that extra #1 pick which looks like a late rounder now. We also have our own pick which will be a mid 1st rounder. I say trade McNabb and Lito and try to get another #1. 3 1's is how Dallas built their 90's Dynasty. We just need a better person judging talent.

We need OL help, a safety, a RB, a fullback, a TE, and probably 1 OLB (im not sold on Gaither or Gocong), another 1 or 2 WR (anquan boldin please if I had my wish) and another DE. We can get 2-3 of these positions via FA (probably WR, fullback, and a LB) the rest we need to draft.

does anyone understand how expensive it is to sign 3 first rounders. the eagles will simply not do it, this team does not make moves where the risk outweighs the reward especially after they feel they got burned on the one move they made that was like that (TO)

also if you want immediate impact on the front line it may be best to go FA there. I am not willing to give up on booker yet seeing as westy hasn’t even really been able to produce yards on the ground. we need better play from our line and an actual fullback before we give up there. there are a couple good TEs in the draft we should be able to get one there and i believe there should be a couple good second round safeties but i don’t think that is as big an issue as every thinks. Demps simply will not play as a rookie regardless of how good he is. Safety is the most complex position in JJs scheme. I would like to see them draft a true strong side safety though, i was never keen on gocong.

that should be strong side backer not strong side safety. sorry haven’t had my coffee yet

+1 on your post man… and to answer your question, no. i would say a good 50 – 60% of people think that teams should just try to get first round picks and draft as many guys as possible there, regardless of cost. to them, first round = superstar….

I disagree on the cost of first rounders. The first 5-10 are really expensive, but I think depending on position, it decreases pretty drastically. With the productivity of alot of first rounders in their first few years now adays, I dont see where your coming from.

I wouldn’t mind seeing them trade Mcnabb for a first rounder at the end of the season. With 3 first rounders we could draft an OT for the future, a Stud running back and a second good TE that can also block (havn’t seen this out of Celek). The only way I would use a first rounder on defense is if there was a stud SS or LB JJ just had to have. DT or DE isn’t a glaring need to me, I like the play of Bunkley and Patterson.

Trading McNabb frees up 25+ mil over the next 2 years. I am not to worried about signing first round picks. If we trade Mcnabb we would also have to consider drafting another QB to give Kolb a little friendly competition. Overall though, we need to develop a running game. It is truely the only way to rebuild, and when you think about the state of the team when McNabb was young we had Duce, Buckhalter and westy as the 3 headed monster. I would love to see us develop that mentality again, and if we need to trade McNabb to get there, so be it.

keep dreaming

First of all, McNabb is due 19.2 mil over the next two years (not 25) and there is no way that at that amount you will get a first round pick for him. Any team that trades for him will have to assume the contract (no player would forego free agency to take a pay cut with another team). At that number you will not be able to get a first day pick for him. Fourth round tops, and you will be lucky to get that.

plus alot of that was due to the fact that no one knew if he would just show up in Jets camp for a week and decide that it sucked and retired again…

AFC East Champs = 1st kinda makes sense when you think about it. I mean they were probably expecting the pats to be sick nasty good again this year.

Good drafting

I do think we need to use at least two first round picks this year, whetehr McNabb stays or goes. Three might be a stretch budget wise. Many of our needs can be filled by by good drafting in rounds 2-5. For example, you can find 4th rounders who can replace Gocong. You can find a real fullback somewhere in there too. I believe a decent big wide receiver can be found in round 2 or 3 as well. I’d grab a stud offensive lineman in round one and maybe a good tight end with the other number one pick — if one was available. Another possibility, if the Eagles want to upgrade their running game will be either Brandon jacobs or derrick Ward. Both are free agents at the end of the season and its doubtful the Giants will keep both. My guess is they’ll sign Jacobs, and let Ward go. Ward is not a bruiser like Jacobs, but he’s a good hard runner who can carry 20+ times a game. Ward will cost some bucks, but not as many as jacobs.

wrong wrong wrong

give demps a chance. westbrook is great and why spend a 1st round on a RB if westbrook could play 3 or 4 more years. as for a TE i hear Kellen Winslow isnt happy lets trade for him. OLB ok maybe try for one because Gocong isnt producing but then we move Gocong to DE and we then even have more of a rotation plus a healthy Abiamiri(hes going to be a monster) and were set on D. Maybo a SS if someone is really good but Demps is a future star.

3 1st rounders are way too costly and im not ready to give up on McNabb untill Kolb shows us more. and i doubt we will draft a QB in the first round untill either Kolb is gone of given up on.

Now onto what you got right. a WR is so important when the only west coast reciver we have is D Jack then we have a problem. the WC offence is all about timing and when Curtis or Brown cant beet the bump then we have a problem. i say go for boldin or trade up for Crabtree. the O line is a huge proble not only are we getting old but our young guys are not improving and i am afraid that andrews is almost done in the NFL. there is something he is not telling us!

all in all we can get better in FA trade and our picks we already have.

as good as westbrook is, the lifespan of NFL running backs is significantly shorter then any other position. look at shaun alexander, he went from being a 2000 yard MVP to the unemployment line in a span of about 2 years. look at Ledanian Tomlinson this year, after being the best back in the NFL for years hes not even averaging 4 yards a carry. Im not saying Westbrook’s done but we definitely need an insurance policy for him, especially since you need atleast two backs in the modern NFL anyway. good running backs are usually available towards the end of the first round, we should spend our first pick on a Tackle and the second on a running back.

as much as id love Kellen Winslow, theres no way the eagles trade for another big mouthed malcontent with a history of insubordination.

I think Gocong is a talented football player who isnt be used correctly. strong side linebacker is the hardest position to fill on the defense because you need a guy whos big enough to play against the run and fast enough to cover tight ends. Gocong is more suited to be a LB/DE hybrid, coming in as a situational pass rusher. imagine how much hell he would create for defenses if he was moved around and blitzed from any area on the field. I think Omar Gaither should play the strongside, he was big enough to play middle last year and hes not bad in coverage. I think andy reid benched him to send a message and Gaither ended up being the fall guy. Akeem Jordan should play weakside, he played well against baltimore and he has good speed.

the eagles have a lot of options with two first round picks. they can keep them both or trade one of them (it better be for a player). NFL GM’s cream their shorts over a chance at picking up an extra 1st rounder and you can get almost anything you want for one. Tight end is a serious need but you can usually find a decent tight end in the middle rounds.

Okay

so I will admit I didn’t read the OP or any comments just the title “the plan to rebuild” and all I have to say is … the reason the Eagles have been so good for so long is that they rebuild every year, they let older players go even if they are popular with the fans and draft very well, we are a young team with veteran leaders. Nuff said.

I really want an impact guy (Crabtree or Beanie Wells) but I think the right call is a stud lineman. If I’m not mistaken, both Runyan and Thomas are FA’s at the end of this season. One or both are gone. Guard or tackle is fine because Herremans can move to tackle.

We do need another RB because Westbrook is wearing down. I love the guy, but I think asking for more than one good year is a reach.

I’ll bet we can get a nice LB in the free agent market as well as a serviceable FB.

Boot LJ, Curtis, and Reggie Brown. I think Avant is ready to step up and Hank & G-Lew are ok for what we pay. There’s another decent WR available in the FA market.

I would go after K-2. He’s a punk, but he’s a monster TE.

im not sure kellen winslow is such a punk as much as he is up set at the conditions in the lockerroom. hell i would be pissed if i had two infections from the locker room

by NickPampani on Nov 25, 2008 4:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

im not saying he doesnt have a right to be pissed, but there are two types of personalities in the NFL. guys who air their grievances with management behind closed doors and guys who do it via the media. Winslow seems to fall into the latter category

even if he is getting a bum rap, his reputation is that of a punk and that alone is enough to scare our front office away after the #81 saga. id love to have him but lets be realisic, cleveland would ask for aleast a 1 or 2 and theres no way reid makes that trade.

He had some issues in college as well. But there is no doubt that he shows up in game day.

knowshon moreno would be a better draft pick at hb then beanie wells. the upside is, with whatever draft pick we land with (probably late) knowshon will fall into our lap. We could then offer the other first for K-2. We can find serviceable OTs and Defenders in the 2nd round.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
