Poll: Did you know regular season games could end in a tie after one OT period?

Donovan McNabb and several other Eagles didn't know that there could be ties in the NFL.  Since the refs mention this possibility before every regular overtime coin flip, I would say there is no excuse for that. Wouldn't you think that these guys would pay attention when determining who is going to get the ball first? But maybe that whole explanation goes in one ear and out the other as noisy chatter.

Maybe I am too critical here. After all, a tie is very rare occurance in the NFL these days. And there are probably younger fans who have never watched a tie game and are therefore unaware of this. I am curious how many average fans may not have known about the possibilities of a tie going into yesterday's Eagles game.

My 7 year old knew this.

You have to admit though, the overtime was almost comical. It actually looked like both offenses were trying as hard as they could to get their defenses back out on the field.

Defense

I felt we had a better chance of winning if our defense got the ball. The Bengals did too, because they had an almost pathological aversion to passing in overtime, for fear of a turnover.

Haha, I was thinking the exact same thing! With as bad as the Bengals O was, I really thought that our best chance (and only chance) of winning that game in OT rested on our D. However, the Bengals had every intention of settling for the tie.

Back in
96 or 97, the Eagles tied the Ravens 10-10. My friend, a Giants fan laughed at me.

A week later, the Giants tied the ’Skins 7-7.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

i actually thought there were 2 overtimes

i knew they didnt jus go on and on and on, but i thought they gave it atleast 2 OTs first b4 throwing away the game

i chose option 2

i knew we had ties but i could of sworn it was 2 ot’s … so the big controversial thing that alot of people are talking about is the majority of people like me thought it was 2 ot’s… including number 5 … so that does raise the eyebrow if our coaching staff pondered the same thing … then we have a handfull of scenarios where we might of done things differently during the last few drives. Yes i know your playing to win every drive, but maybe we would of went for it if we knew it was only one ot… maybe donavon would of audibled on one of the drives … who knows … discuss :D

McNabb audibles based on how the defense lines up, not the moment of the game. I can’t see how his audibles or anything would be affected. He runs the play the coach gives him unless the defense lines up in a formation that would negate that play.

by JasonB on Nov 17, 2008 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

I could really care less if the players knew the game could end in a tie. It doesn’t mean anything to them. Donovan McNabb isn’t calling the plays. His job is to execute. Whether he knew the game would end or not has no bearing on his play, at least not as far I can see.

wait a minute though...

there is NO WAY that the entire eagles coaching staff didnt know the rules.
Even if andy didnt know, the chance of the ENTIRE coaching staff not knowing is ZERO.

Woulda been talked about through the headset for sure

this is a pretty basic rule. i’m suprised how many didnt know it. now if you asked about a world series game being called off after 6.5 innings not counted as a win for the team in the lead, thats another story. ;)

by sixrfan on Nov 17, 2008 8:55 PM EST reply actions

i knew the rule in baseball

but didnt know what the ramifications of the world series would do to it.

For what its worth, i think the commish (BOOOOOOOOOOOO) got it right on that one. WS game should never end in a tie.

And i probably mentioned this yesterday but i dont think a regular season football game should end in a tie.

I REALLY like the college OT setup

The college set-up is like a hockey or soccer shoot out. Too easy for a quick blown play to negate an entire game’s worth of effort. And I hate the idea of a game ending in a shoot out. Why not just flip a coin, or have the two fattest players mud-wrestle at the 50 yard line?

I don’t mind ties myself. If you can’t score once more in 15 minutes of play, you don’t deserve more chances to win or lose.

by Andrew B on Nov 17, 2008 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah is sort of agree with that last statement...

and also a good point about college overtime…

but i just really hate the feeling of a tie

It didn’t affect anything, so I’m not sure why anyone’s making a big deal out of it. Another thing is this: McNabb has an excellent point in that no other level of football ends in a tie, so why the hell would the NFL? Now, I know there are ties, but I never looked at it that way until McNabb said it. It is stupid that the game can end in a tie.

Ties used to be a big part of the game

When I was a kid in the early ‘70s, ties happened all the time in the regular season. At all levels. I remember not liking the new sudden death overtime rule when it was implemented (1974 I think?), because I thought it would give an unfair advantage to the winner of the coin toss, even though that was the format they used for post-season games. Fortunately, the stats have shown that not to be the case. College football didn’t institute their overtime rules until years after the NFL. I’m okay with ties in the NFL. In fact, I wouldn’t complain if they went back to the old way (which of course they never will). If you don’t win in regulation, you don’t deserve to win.

McNabb looks like a boob

I live in Phoenix, and the local sports guys are killing him. It was also Tony Korn-holer’s go-to joke of the night on MNF. Jaws was just embarrassed. Why is McNabb such a lightning rod for controversy? I’ve got to tell you, I’ve about had it with him.

Also, if you think not knowing the rule had no effect on the game, you are dead wrong, IMO. Look at how teams (and players) strategize and react when it’s tied near the end of the fourth quarter. They are often playing TO GET TO OVERTIME! There’s a different mindset when you go into that last series knowing that there are no more chances. Instead of Baskett trying to catch the hail Mary, he could have tried to bat it into the end zone for another guy to get the tip. Had everyone been on the same page, they may have thought of that.

i agree with you 100%

You cant tell me that not knowing that rule doesnt change some things… for one thing if you thought there was another OT your level of urgency would be totally different than knowing a tie was possible.

I was praying that somehow someone from Cincy would be boneheaded enough to commit pass interference and let Akers kick a chip shot for the win
