Choke Job!
Lets turn our attention now to another important matter to warm our hearts after the listless game yesterday.
The enormous likelihood of the Giants choking away the season in the playoffs.
Lets review the performance of uber-dominant teams of the past 14 years, shall we? By this, I mean teams that went 13-3 or better.
Choke jobs:
1995 - Chiefs, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed
1996 - Broncos, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed
1997 - 49ers, 13-3, lose NFC Championship Game at home as #1 seed, again
1997 - Chiefs, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed, again
1997 - Packers, 13-3, choke away the season in the Super Bowl as #2 seed, NFC team losing to the AFC for the first time since 1983.
1998 - Vikings, 15-1, lose NFC Championship Game at home as #1 seed
1999 - Jaguars, 14-2, lose AFC Championship Game at home as #1 seed
1999 - Colts, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #2 seed
2000 - Titans, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed
2001 - Bears, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as the #2 seed
2001 - Steelers, 13-3, lose AFC Championship Game at home as #1 seed
2001 - Rams, 14-2, choke away the season in the Super Bowl as #1 seed
2003 - Chiefs, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #2 seed, again
2004 - Steelers, 15-1, lose AFC Championship Game at home as #1 seed
2005 - Colts, 14-2, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed, again
2005 - Broncos, 13-3, lose AFC Championship Game at home as #2 seed
2005 - Seahawks, 13-3, choke away the season in the Super Bowl as #1 seed
2006 - Chargers, 14-2, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed
2006 - Bears, 13-3, choke away the season in the Super Bowl as #1 seed
2006 - Ravens, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #2 seed
2007 - Colts, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #2 seed, again
2007 - Cowboys, 13-3, choke away the season in the Divisionals as #1 seed
2007 - Packers, 13-3, lose NFC Championship Game at home as #2 seed
2007 - Patriots, 16-0, choke away perfection in the Super Bowl as #1 seed in the all time choke-job of the #1 NFL team of all time
Damn, that's quite a list!
Best team by record won:
1996 - Packers, 13-3, beat the Patriots, 11-5 in the Super Bowl
2003 - Patriots, 14-2, beat the Panthers, 11-5 in the Super Bowl
2004 - Patriots, 14-2, beat the Eagles, 13-3, in the Super Bowl
Right now, of course, the Titans are the best team by record.
Even match:
1998 - Falcons, 14-2, lose to the Broncos, 14-2, in the Super Bowl
1999 - Titans, 13-3, lose to the Rams, 13-3, in the Super Bowl
So:
13+ win teams are 2-15 since 2002 at winning the Super Bowl.
13+ win teams are 4-32 since 1995 at winning the Super Bowl.
13+ win teams choked 12 of 32 times in their first playoff game, and another 7 times as the home team in the Championship game, followed up by 5 teams with the better record choking in the Super Bowl.
Just 5 of the last 13 Super Bowls have been won by a dominant team that won at least 13 games.
From the time when the Packers were putting the finishing touches beating the Patsies in 1996, just 1 #1 NFC seed has brought home a championship, and that by just one yard.
Damn, I can hardly wait for the finger pointing!
I feel better already too.

nice numbers
the tie hurts us, but I’ll always take pride in other teams choking…long as its not us…
which reminds me:
if the cowboys, redskins and falcons lose next week….they’ll be 6-5….if we beat the ravens…we’ll be 6-4-1….ahead of all 3 of those teams…correct?
wow.

was refering to the fact that we're still that close to the wildcard
However, the only one of those three teams that is likely to lose next week is atlanta

How the Birds respond to this game will determine the season
A loss like this might be just what the team needs – then again…

the cards will be tough
i think we’ll beat the ravens and browns though

interesting STAT
desean jackson among the league leaders in “passes not caught”
which is a statistic that combines, drops, incomplete passes thrown “his way,” passes batted down by defenders thrown “his way,” and interceptions thrown “his way”
http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?year=2008&type=Receiving&range=NFL&rank=107
clearly, Donovan is trying to get him the ball…whether he is open or not…
Jackson also has 8 catches of 25 yards or more, which puts him in the top 10 in the league…

2 things to add
he is in pretty good company there. i dont mind that
im not sure how much i trust half these news papers

FO lists that statistic as a catch rate, the percentage of targets that get completed. They compile it from the play by play and state that they can not separate the performance of the WR and his quarterback.
Jackson also has 8 catches of 25 yards or more, which puts him in the top 10 in the league…
For my money, long attempts are harder to complete and therefore his catch rate is lower. He does seem to have butterfingers at times, but overall I like him when he’s not showboating in the EZ (though I would have begrudgingly let him if it sealed the deal in OT yesterday)…
