Breaking: Brian Westbrook has fractured ribs

Minutes ago Andy Reid announced at his day after press conference that Brian Westbrook has fractured ribs. I'll update as soon as more info about what this will mean comes available.

Things going from bad to worse.

[Note by JasonB, 10/06/08 2:33 PM EDT ] Update from PE.com

Head coach Andy Reid updated the injury situation on Monday and announced that running back Brian Westbrook fractured two of his ribs during Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Westbrook came to the sideline pointing to his ribs after he scored. Trainers worked on him on the sideline before taking him into the locker room for further evaluation. It was during that time where Westbrook received a Cortisone shot. After the game, Westbrook said that he would likely have an MRI on his ribs Monday.

omfg

unreal….. we’ve been absolutly dominated by the injury bug this year. LJ, Andrews, Westbrook, Curtis, Brown, McNabb, Asante in the preseason, heck even klecko with his hand thing. This is just unfortunate.

real teams fight through the injuries and don’t boo hoo about them…see the other team in this great state of ours

why does our fan base suck so much?

can we sign a fucking fullback now?

please?

this team can survive without brian westbrook, but if lorenzo booker is getting more than 5 touches a game, it won’t.

All this doesn’t matter. We have the bye coming up after this week’s game, and if we can’t beat the 49ers WITH OR WITHOUT Westbrook, we’ve got much bigger issues than if he has a cracked rib or two.

Buck...

What are the odds on Buckhalter making it in from the 1 yard line next game? I’m going to put $20 on him trying to jump over line and landing short.

Speaking of Buck… isn’t he long overdue for another knee injury?

It's just that kind of season....

I just have a feeling that we’re going to end up with Booker as our starting back this season… Do we even have anyone behind him on the depth chart? I guess Hunt would be his backup at that point?

It’s time for the management to inject some life in this team… We need a big receiver, and from what I’ve heard Roy Williams is out there. We have a good core of players, but we need another offensive playmaker…. Westbrook can’t do it all. We have two first rounders next year, why not give one up? Hell, we’re just going to trade down eventually anyway…

oh God not the big WR talk ...

that pistol is starting to look awfully tasty … I can’t take another off season of guess who the Eagles are trading for this week.

I'm guessing you have never had a rib injury.

It is painful with every breath or movement not to add getting pounded on by men twice your size. If they were just bruised he would definitely be playing on Sunday but a fracture is tough dude. I’m hoping it’s not as bad as I fear.

I don’t think that’s the case at all, dude.

I’m the most vocal Anti-Reid guy here, I think, and a lot of people here disagree with me. But I also don’t think it’s a knee-jerk reaction.

Over the course of the Reid era, I think you can find plenty of instances of:

1. Playing down to the level of less-talented teams.
2. Failure to finish teams off. The Rams & Lions don’t count.
3. Poor clock management.
4. Slow starts, highly inconsistent play from week-to-week.

That doesn’t mean I don’t support the team. That doesn’t mean that I won’t go to the Giants game that I have tickets for and get drunk and scream my lungs out.

Would you rather we just be Dave Spadaro (and I say that knowing that it’s his job to spin things the Eagles’ way, not as criticism of him)? No way, we spend hundreds or thousands of bucks on tickets and merchandise, and 3 hours every sunday watching the team and countless other hours reading everything about them, despite rather consistent failure to meet expectations (And yes, those expectations were very high in some cases).

Look at where the team is right now. It’s kind of train wreck. If we don’t talk about the negatives, including the current 2-game losing streak, there’s not much to talk about.

Alright guys, go get ’em next week!

haha I wonder sometimes if he doesn’t just snap when they do bad knowing he has to go in and make it look/sound like we are about to win the superbowl. Damn he is annoying … and yes I know it’s his job but it’s still annyoing.

can't imagine it's soon...

Broken ribs are tough… I think it’s all about how you react to playing in excruciating pain and how quickly you recover. Even when he does, he’ll be wearing extra pads to cover him up, which most players have issues hanging onto the ball with. I wouldn’t expect him back before the bye week.

And @ Bleeding Pink… Our fan base doesn’t suck, we just haven’t won a major professional championship since 1983. That’s 25 years for a major city. And we’ve been to them all the championship games, and been beaten in some heartbreaking fashions (i.e. McNabb’s Super Bowl vomit, Joe Carter’s HR off the Wild Thing). And no, the Arena Football League championship does NOT count.

by iggles on Oct 6, 2008 9:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So, Reid had no problem playing Westbrook with broken ribs, but couldn’t have Donovan run a QB sneak with bruised ribs. Brilliant!

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on Oct 6, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Westbrook's Ribs

I feel bad for Westbrook, but if this is just one more of the litany of excuses we’ve listened to from Andy and the team the last four years, I am not buying it. The Eagles are like some overwrought teenage girl complaining about all their problems. Other teams have backup players starting all the time (See Steelers over Jaguars), but they keep winning. If Andy et al had drafted well, there would be competent backups available. I think the real problem is that this team is so stuck on running the same plays over and over, that when Westbrook is hurt they can’t run a Buck friendly offense. The offensive line is so wimpy. If they face a physically tough defense, they can’t deliver a blow. They just fall down on their big fat rears. I saw in the Philly paper today somebody starting to blame Hunt. Last week it was LJ and Schobel as the problem. Then its the receivers. The common denominator is the coach. Somebody give Jeff Lurie the cell number for Bill Cowher. We need a macho coach big time.

by TexasEagle on Oct 6, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You’ve hit the nail on the head. Our problem is depth. Our first team matches up well with anybody. For years our offense has been driven by McNabb and Westbrook playing at incredible levels. Now that McNabb can’t/won’t run we’re even more dependent on Westbrook, and when he goes down, the drop off in talent is huge. Same with Andrews. Most teams lose a starting back and an offensive lineman during the course of a year. The Redskins were playing without two D line starters and one of their starting corners. Not everybody collapses because of that. I blame the coaching staff for not finding bettter backups, and as you point out, for not figuring out ways to design game plans that allow our back ups to play to whatever skills they do have.
