Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles Open Thread
Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles, Oct 5, 2008 1:00 PM EDT
Location: Lincoln Financial - Field Philadelphia, PA
Time: 1p Eastern
TV: FOX
Radio: 94.1 WYSP, 610 WIP, Sirius 126
Did you know? (from NFL.com)
3-0. After a Week 1 loss to the Giants, the Redskins are going for a fourth consecutive win. ... Redskins QB Jason Campbell has posted a 100-plus passer rating in past three games and is second in the NFC with a 102.2 rating. ... Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh is the only other Redskins quarterback to post a 100-plus passer rating for a season (Baugh did it in 1945). ... Eagles rookie WR DeSean Jackson is on track for 88 catches and 1,308 yards. Both would be club rookie records.
My usual post game headlines will be late today since I'll be at the game itself! Go Birds!

Let's go Phillies!!
Beat the Brewers and bring on the Dodgers!
It would be nice if the Eagles would win too, but today is all about the Phightin’ Phils.

Here is a little pregame notes and stats
-The Eagles have won three straight at home, outscoring opponents by a combined 70-18 in the process. Philadelphia hasn’t allowed a touchdown during its 3-game win streak at “The Linc.”
-Jason Campbell has yet to throw an interception in 2008. His 124 attempts to start a season without a pick are the most by any Redskin quarterback since Brad Johnson had 126 without an INT to begin 1999. (this could change when he meets asante)
-Clinton Portis recorded his 20th 100-yard rushing game as a Redskin last weekend (11th on the road). The Redskins are 17-3 overall in those contests and have won 10 of their last 11 when Portis goes over the century mark.
- Redskins rush is ranked #11 and the Eagles rush defense is ranked #1
- Redskins total offense #9, Eagles total defense #3
- Eagles total offense #6, Redskins total defense #14

by keithk on Oct 5, 2008 1:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Remember how last week felt at the start?
This one is the exact opposite, they’re doing everything well from the start, unlike last week where it was bad right away and you just got that feeling. Granted, they got it together last week and will probably come back to earth some in this game, but good lord it feels like the Rams game.
The Birds are an easy team to like when they play like this, PLUS get the breaks from officials.
This is definitely a need game, but then again the Eagles with Westbrook are better than .500 and the upcoming sked looks really favorable.
If they put some more distance between them on this drive, maybe they can use Westbrook a little less than they normally would.
… holy crap Reggie Brown is looking revitalized.

I actually think maybe they sent him out there to try to make one they didn’t necessarily need so he can get his head right.

by jayt on Oct 5, 2008 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Problem is kickers are not a dime a dozen. Some no-name chump can miss from 50 just the same … I guess we want a guy Reid doesn’t trust from that distance so he goes for it more!
Better to work it out now so he knows when not to send him out there in key late-season games and, should we be so lucky, in the playoffs.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the way Sav is pinning them deep
I wish we’d just punt in that situation. 4th and 1 or 4th and 1 lets just go for it, otherwise outside of 40 let sav pin them.
by keithk on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe so. I really think Reid just wanted to show confidence in his guy there. … you know Reid’s a take-the-points guy, but yeah, he hasn’t yet accepted that Akers can’t make those kicks this year.
I love watching this D.

I live in North Dakota and I cant follow the game other than on nfl.com. Anyways… I saw westbrook gettin the ball early but all Ive been seeing was buuchalters name for the last few plays, did westbrook get hurt? NFL.com doesnt update on injuries or anything.

Buckhalter*
sorry I was in a rush
by midnitegreen on Oct 5, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fox said something about his chest … he took a series off but just played this last series.
Not sure it’s a terrible idea to have Westbrook miss a few plays in favor of Buck even if he’s fine … West stays fresh and doesn’t risk aggravating the injury, and Buck stays involved, and inevitably when we need him again, he’ll have been getting work in games.
Pam Oliver just said rib injury but Westbrook will continue to play.

Once they get outside of their scripted plays the offense starts to sputter.

with Westy's injury issues
I’m sad Booker hasn’t done more for us. We know what to expect from Buck, and he hasn’t played badly, but I think we hoped for some spark from BOok…
by keithk on Oct 5, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Only positive spin I can put on it is dude is a second-year player in a completely different offense, maybe his head’s swimming or they can’t trust him in pass protection yet.
If he does nothing all year I’ll be annoyed, but I’ll give him some time.
The birds are what they are so far without anything from Curtis, Booker and Chris Clemons … maybe we get something from them before it’s over. Nice to have guys like that in reserve.

It’s just one of those games … special teams playing really well, they’re catching breaks.
A lot of the Eagles’ games are about which Eagles team shows up, not who they play. There’s no team in the NFL that blows them off the field.

Yeah, I live in Redskins Country, usually I wait for them to crash and burn and weeks later for the fans to admit it … this year it was the opposite, everyone finally got off the bandwagon, but they have talent and Zorn is no dumbass. (they got back on after Dallas, but that’s not the point)
They’re tough. They can be beaten, for sure, but they’re tough.

That was a pathetic possession. This is why a team as “good” as the Eagles is able to lose games.

by keithk on Oct 5, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree … on one hand.
On the other, every good team goes three-and-out sometimes, especially when they are playing another good team.
I do agree the play-calling has gotten stale after they ran off the script, but overall as a half I’ll take it.

The offense has to get its swag from the first drive back.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The D is playing well enough … not unbelievably, but they can win like this if the offense can sustain and finish drives.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
See, that can’t happen because they have used up all of their scripted plays. Now we have to rely on Andy/Marty’s playcalling. Wonders that has done us so far.

by joshjoshjosh on Oct 5, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If they piss this away ...
… it’s gonna be a big problem. With the schedules the whole division is playing, it’s going to be tough to make up ground. It might not matter if the Eagles win 10 or 11 games if they can’t leapfrog WAS/DAL/NYG. They already have two NFC losses and a division loss, for tiebreaker purposes.
On the flipside, if they win … it’s 3-2 with @SF, bye, ATL @ SEA coming up.
Can’t overstate how big a half this is.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 2:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Even just for the mood surrounding the team and their confidence going forward. Gotta see something this half. The Skins are gonna get some shots in, but if we get in a situation like last week, Birds gotta pull it out.

That’s when you switch up off the blitz sometimes and mix up your coverages.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
One time I saw Mikell time his blitz real late, but a lot of times the Skins have picked it up OK. Even when the Eagles are getting pressure, the Backs are picking the right guys (inside first, then out) on the pickups. That’s credit to the skins.
Offense gotta do something. Drops aren’t gonna help

That is the matchup you want. Westbrook on London Fletcher.

Again. Nice tackle by Fletcher.
That’s more Redskins playing well than Eagles playing crappy. Not that they’re doing anything great, but give Skins credit. Begrudingly if you have to.

Huge Reggie Brown play. Skins forgot to tackle him dead.
We are going to need to steal this one like we did that one last year against the Redskins when Westbrook scored on that late screen.
It’s fairly evident that the Eagles are the 4th best team in the division right now.
by D3Keith on Oct 5, 2008 3:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A quick TD here could make it 23-21 with 9 or 10 minutes left.
Red Zone offense … MUST HAVE A TD.

by ajay on Oct 5, 2008 3:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Didn’t even need to score. A QB sneak would’ve got a 1st down.
It appeared McNabb changed the play though, maybe they can share the blame!
The only positive I can squeeze out of this is that suddenly it’s not so dead on the sideline, maybe someone is inspired to make a huge play. It is 23-17 with 7:18 left, it’s not over-over … but if they don’t win, that missed opportunity will loom large.

Yeah, they’re looking 4th best in the NFC East right now. That’s not terrible, but it’s not playoffs either.
If they get the ball back here, I can’t fathom how they’re going to score the winning TD. Maybe they’ll get close and kick another field goal, then try to get the ball back again and run out of time.
If they don’t spend the whole bye week on red zone offense …

He’s just another Pennsy Cowboys fan, probaby 18 years old, never liked the cowboys when they were down which is probably the reason he only recently joined a cowboys board. Just a frontrunner who has NEVER been to texas let alone dallas. Which is probably the reason that he is listed as a Phillies and a 76ers fan.

McNabb
I’m sick of hearing top 5 quarterback when he’s healthy. Without scrambling, he’s a mid 10-20. Every time he threw the ball, the receivers had to adjust, either jumping or diving. The best YAC was Regie’s “no touch”. If you put the ball in the right place, the receivers can do a lot more.
