Hines Ward is good at blocking

When teaching wide receivers how to block... coaches should show them tapes of the Steeler's Hines Ward. This is Ward's block on the Bengals Keith Rivers from this past weekend...

Rivers, a LB, had his jaw broken on that play.

I for one, can't wait to see Ward's blocking prowess on display next weekend when the Steelers host the New York Giants...

yes. i see no reason why Fuhrer Goodell insists on fining this guy every week… but you’re right, he can wait until after next week to suspend him (cuz you know it’s coming). in retrospect, I’m happy we got out of the steelers game as healthy as we did

I'm going on record here

The Steelers will beat the Giants.
Against worthy opponents – and those are hard to find on the Giants schedule – the Giants haven’t shown me anything.

If you look at the Giants schedule the rest of the way compared to the start of the year… it’s startling how much tougher it is from here on out. We’re going to really see what the giants are made of these next few weeks.

I'm going on the record as well

i love hines ward. Dude’s always smiling and having a good time… and LOVES to smack the defense. Show me another receiver in the history of the NFL that took/takes as much pride in laying out a defender…

I’m going to be the contrarian here, I don’t particularly like Hines Ward.

That hit on Keith Rivers isn’t a difficult play, and it doesn’t make Ward tough. He’s hitting a defenseless guy who doesn’t see him. It’s perfectly legal, but in no way does it make Hines Ward a “tough guy”. Yet his entire reputation seems to be made from hits like these.

I don’t particularly like his “evil” smile he always has after he smashes some poor guy from his blindside either. The plays are fun to watch, but again, it doesn’t make you a great player and it doesn’t make you tough.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 7:59 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually you’re wrong. It takes nerve for a 5’10" wide receiver to consistently blow up linebackers knowing full well that defensive players will have every opportunity to get him back. After he crushed Ed Reed last year the Ravens D put a bounty on him,….he responded by delivering a crushing block to Reed AGAIN this year.

Hines Ward is flat out tough.

Plus,…hitting defenseless individuals is called “good hitting” on defense,…on offense its called “cheap shot”. Double standard.

It’s not a double standard. When a defender hits an offensive player who is “defenseless”, as you say… it’s a penalty and possibly a fine.

It’s called on defensive backs who hit wide receivers in defenseless positions, and it’s called a chop block on running backs and O-lineman who block someone below the knees who is already engaged. There’s no double standard there.

But to argue over the rules wasn’t my intention. What Ward did was in no way illegal.

But nothing about that hit on Rivers by Ward makes him a great player or a “tough” player. That’s my point. It’s not a difficult play, either. He’s developed a reputation as a “tough guy”, but there’s nothing “tough” about hitting some guy when he’s not looking.

I’m just tired of people raving about how “tough” he is because of hits like that.

When he starts pancaking linebackers who are coming at him head-on, we can talk about him being “tough”.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 1:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Again,…you fail to appreciate that its his attitude thats tough. Thats why people praise him, not the hits. The people he’s blindsiding aren’t civilians,..they’re linebackers. Its their job to hit offensive players. Hines Ward has been doing this for 11 years. Have you asked yourself why nobody has gotten him back?? The answer is they HAVE gotten it back. The difference is that he takes it, smiles,..and hits them back. He doesn’t bitch about it. Because he’s TOUGH!!!

by ismail on Oct 21, 2008 2:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

OK, “tough” is just a state of mind, then. Consider me the toughest motherF-er on the planet then. I’ll await John Madden’s unending praise.

There isn’t anything tough about a crack-back block. I find that hard to deny.

The Ravens don’t hate him because he’s got a “tough attitude.” They hate him because he loves to hit people when they’re not looking. And I’m sure they also hate that he routinely gets praised for it.

By the way, I am completely aware that the mere idea of being critical of Hines Ward is sacreligous in Western PA. I guess I dare to defy the Steeler faith.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 2:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

State of mind? Did you just ignore the part where I said he’s been hit viciously on multiple occasions yet gets up and gives it right back.?

There is something tough about a crack-back block,…practically daring LBs (40 pounds heavier than you) to hurt you after routinely humiliating them week after week is pretty tough IMO.

The Ravens were the same team that were gloating for months after blindsiding Roethlisberger , hitting him and piledriving him into the ground giving him a concussion. Why is this ok but Hines Ward’s block isn’t?? Both were legal,..both were blindside hits and both were relevant to the ongoing play. Ravens are the biggest whinos in the league. They take pleasure in hurting folks but when it happens to them they cry.

Good Lord, the last thing I want to do is get in the middle of a Baltimore/Pittsburgh feud. Talk about a fight with no one worth cheering for. (I hope you see I’m having fun with this).

If you think a crack-back block is an act that proves your toughness, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

If he takes big hits, goes over the middle and makes catches in traffic. Hey, that’s tough.

But in my mind, a blindside hit is not tough. And again, from what I see, read, and hear — people are always praising him for it. It’s fun to watch, but it’s not “tough”.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 2:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it’s not his fault the rook wasn’t looking. Plus

It’s not a difficult play, either.

if that’s the case why aren’t all wideouts doing this? …

You see a lot of guys go low, or go at it a little less dangerously than Ward did there.

That the rookie wasn’t looking is not Ward’s fault, I concur.

Football players often like to refer to themselves as “warriors”, and the game as a “war”. And it that same vane, their is a certain honor code in the sport.

What Ward does exists in this strange place, a lot of people feel its part of the game. Others feel that what he does, hitting players when they aren’t looking, isn’t so “honorable”. Football players don’t like a play where a player can’t defend himself from injury. It’s their careers.

Think about the uproar that Warren Sapp caused when he ended the career of that Packers’ lineman. There were good arguments on both sides. That was away from the play. This hit on Rivers wasn’t, but Ward has certainly made that same hit well away from a play before.

Make your own judgements, but I don’t see anything “tough” about it.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 3:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ward has never made a big hit further than 5-10 yards from the play,..atleast that I recall. Warren Sapp was literally 70 yards away from the play,…completely different scenarios.

Like I said,…there is no “grey” area. Blindside hits are done to offensive players and special teams practically every snap. Don’t single out Ward for something the entire league does. Thats really why i’m taking issue with you.

by ismail on Oct 21, 2008 3:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I haven’t singled out Ward. The media has. Especially John Madden. He’s love for Ward is well-documented.

And again, they love him for hits like this. There’s my disagreement.

Oh, and other players in the league aren’t breaking the jawbone of opponents who don’t even see the hit coming.

If Rodney Harrison had done the same thing, there would be people calling for his head.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 3:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it’s his own fault that he didn’t see that … Ward was plenty visible from that angle. I mean the hits Sheldon Brown layed on Reggie Bush and Stephen Jackson were almost identical are you saying Sheldon shouldn’t recieve praise for great plays?

"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"

by Whodie126 on Oct 21, 2008 3:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

So if someone gets injured on a legal play it automatically becomes a “cheap shot”?? But as long as nobody gets their jaw broken its all good. Thats the most nonsensical incoherent position i’ve heard yet

by ismail on Oct 21, 2008 3:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Where did I say it was a cheap shot? Where? I didn’t.

Again, and I think I’ve said this three times already — it was legal. And I don’t think it was dirty, though others disagree with that.

Here’s what I keep saying, and I can’t understand how you can disagree with me:

It’s not “TOUGH”. It’s not.

Hitting a player who isn’t looking is not the sign of a “tough guy”. It’s just not. Are you arguing with that?

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 3:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Tough is Clinton Portis and Marion Barber (gasp, I know)… who routinely take on blitzing linebackers HEAD ON in the backfield and put them on their backs.

Smashing some rookie from the side while he’s not looking, breaking his jaw in the process… not “tough”.

by BFH on Oct 21, 2008 4:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I disagree with you because considering the consequences of his actions,…I think it is tough. There are hundreds of receivers in this league,…why doesn’t anybody else do it? I assure you,…its not because of their principles. Its because its hard and its dangerous. And it puts a bullseye on your back.

I don’t understand how you can’t acknowledge that it is indeed TOUGH!

Nice

Just like the block Keith Byers put on Pepper Johnson years ago. Hopefully next time it’s on a scumbag like TO.
