NFL Trade deadline rumor roundup
The NFL trade deadline is 4pm today and the rumors of possible deals are more rampant than any year I can remember. Rarely does much happen at the NFL trade deadline, but this year could mark a change.
I'll continue to update this post as more rumors roll in.
There several reports saying that the Eagles have interest in Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez. Those are nothing new and for now they're more or less totally unsubstantiated. There's been no reports of an offer or anything on the Eagles behalf. It has been reported that the Giants offered a 6th round pick.
Chris Mortenson told ESPN radio that the Lions are shopping WR Roy Williams and that he was told the Eagles are among the teams who could be interested. NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Cowboys have made an offer for Williams, but the Lions have not accepted it. He says the Lions are looking for more than a 1st round pick. Good luck getting that...
KC running back Larry Johnson is reportedly also on the trade block.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 3:15 PM EDT ] ESPN radio is reporting that the Giants, Bills, and Eagles have all made offers for Tony Gonzalez. Take that for what it's worth.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 3:30 PM EDT ] Most reports now seem to suggest that the Eagles aren't that interested in Roy Williams and that they're much more interested in Gonzalez. Dallas appears to be the only team still in for Roy Williams. Half hour to go.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 3:34 PM EDT ] Reportedly Chiefs GM Carl Peterson said that no deals will be made today
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson gave every indication that his team will not be making a deal in the final hours before the NFL trade deadline of 4 p.m. ET, Tuesday.
"No, nada, nothing, zero," Peterson said, from the fall owners meetings, when asked if he had any possible deals for some of his high-priced veterans. TE Tony Gonzalez, RB Larry Johnson and CB Patrick Surtain have all been rumored to be on the trading block for the Chiefs, who are in rebuilding mode.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 4:07 PM EDT ] Latest news is that the Lions have traded WR Roy Williams to Dallas for "at least one first round pick." Tony Gonzalez will not be traded.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 4:12 PM EDT ] ESPN conflicts with the Schefter report saying that Williams was traded to Dallas for two 2nd round picks. Schefter says Dallas gave up a 1st, 3rd and 6th round pick.
[Note by JasonB, 10/14/08 4:21 PM EDT ] The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Dallas surrendered a first, a third, and a sixth for Williams. Wow... for an oft injured, underperfoming WR with an expiring contract? Williams has only played 16 games once.

we need
tight ends who don’t fumble, can block, and don’t cut short their routes.
i say give’em a 4th round and a 6th round conditional.

We never seem to get players when we've reportedly made an offer
Honestly… do we really want Tony G?
I think we do… i’m just posing an honest question
i’m not sure i’d give up lito for him

I partially agree with you,
Even if we get Tony, is he gonna get the ball thrown to him. The Eagles have been using the TE more as a blocker this year. They keep running those short motions leaving TE to help out the guards. I can’t see Tony assuming that role.
LJ numbers are partially bad because he is being called to block more than catch…Even though he still SUCKS.

Also, I wouldn't give up 1 first rounder for Roy Williams
Right about now, he is worth a 2nd rounder at best. I wouldn’t even trade Lito straight up. Roy never has produced, can we expect him to do so here? We spread the more than Detroit, He is not Anquan Boldin or Larry Fitzgerald. He is not woth a first rounder.

yeah but the question is are we tailoring our play calling because LJ has stone hands and can’t catch a cold?

I have to assume that if you have a future hall of fame TE, they’d find a way to get him the ball a lot.

Tony has further to go to catch DMacs ankle passes … I agree if you have a guy like TG out there you will get him the ball.

Anyone else concerned that this is a good deal for Dallas? Yes they are giving up a ton but they have top pretty good WRs now…you couldn’t say that yesterday. And yes, Williams is under-performing but he hasn’t exactly played with the best quarterbacks.

I disagree that Dallas got that much better
They had enough weapons already to dominate.
If this were the college game I’d think it was a good move/
However, in the NFL you can actually overstack your roster to the point that there isnt enough football to go around… then people like TO complain, and it all just falls apart.
Its eaxctly what i think happens here.

Looking at the Cowboy’s roster, it’s really hard to understand why they would do this.
Patrick Crayton is playing lights out, TO is on the roster, Jason Witten is arguably the best TE in the game and Miles Austin seems to be able to get deep. How does Roy Williams fit in? He’s the third WO? Do you abandon 2 tight end sets?
What about Marion Barber?
Maybe it is still Christmas after all…

I think Austin is hurt … and just a guess … but maybe they are preparing for the meltdown of TO that everyone knows is imminent, even more so now.

In regards to Williams, Dallas clearly thought they needed him more than the Eagles though they did. I like(d) Roy Williams, but I think to match Dallas’ offer with DeSean Jackson playing so well, Baskett starting to emerge as a legit guy, and Brown and Curtis hopefully coming back after the bye, would have been foolish.
It’d be horrendously stupid if they did so and didn’t re-sign him.
If Dallas doesn’t re-sign him, it’s a shortsighted move, but they perceived that they had less depth at WR (especially now w/Austin hurt) than the Eagles did, it makes more sense for them as a “save the season” type move. Despite their better record, there’s probably no small measure of panic going on at Cowboys HQ right now.

If you are Roy Williams
You can almost name your price in the off season. Figuring that Dallas WILL NOT win the SB this year, that is WAYYYYYY too much to give away for one season. therefore they’re likely to try to pay more to keep the investment in house
IMO, this is worse than the joey galloway move. They stand to lose WAY more

No way we should have payed that much for Roy, good move. I would’ve loved the TG trade, I don’t think a third (or even second) round pick is too much for him. He’ll still be productive for quite a while. Hunt…well it’s true that he hasn’t shown a lot, but he probably never got a chance to. If this new guy shores up ST, then it’s good. But releasing a kid with POTENTIAL instead of someone who is clearly done (Shoebel, even Daniels?) is a bit risky. If we do need him because of injuries later on, he’s hopefully still available, like Andrew B mentioned elsewhere.

this was obviously a desperation move by jerry jones. most people thought that dallas was a favorite to win the nfc this year but with romo, f. jones, newman, pacman jones, austin all out for awhile, the next four games will be crucial for them.
personally, i think TO is going to be upset with this move and if he doesn’t get his touches, he’ll start crying again like a baby…
on tony g, i would have given up a first rounder for him (not sure if carl peterson would’ve taken it but i assume he would). he still has good 3 years left in his tank and i’ve been off the lj smith bandwagon for 3 years. we could really use a stud te…

dallas was stacked with draft picks thats why they stepped up…they still have 9 picks left and will get 2 more for free agent losses…they have 1 2nd..1 3rd …2 4’s ….2 5’s….1 6th…2 7th’s…and 2 more for comming….the 3rd is clev which will be high and the 4th is det which will be a very high 4…so there in strong shape going into the draft…plus the first rdpick they gave away will not bring them a talent like roy who is only 26….

you are correct ...
there are definite matchup issues … I think Witten will fair better than either because now Witten almost HAS to be covered by a nickel or LB.
I just think no matter how much of a front Cowboys fans put up … every single one is worried that TO or Roy will tear this team apart. Roy wasn’t happy being second option in Det but is cool with it in Dal … Maybe because TO is older than CJ I might buy that. But if TO become second string to Roy …. BOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, the team must be pretty impressed with Jenkins, I mean the kid does have talent.

Yeah this is a time bomb. There will most definitely not be enough touches to go around in that locker room now. The thing that no one is mentioning is that up until now, none of the other offensive players would open their mouths if T.O. was bitching… Enter Roy Williams who possesses T.O.‘s mouth, but not so much T.O.’s skill (although he thinks he does). Roy will snap back at T.O.’s public rantings, and that should start a shit storm quickly.
Best case is that Brad Johnson can’t knock off the rust, gets plowed by a team that just beat a good Redskins team, and the first game of the Williams/Owens experiment goes to hell. That should provide for an interesting locker room afterwards.

I wish so bad that we played Dallas while Brad was playing QB

Yeah if I were a Cowboys fan, I’d find Brad’s lack of mobility disturbing… now if you also take into account that their offensive line doesn’t feel like blocking people anymore and the fact that you can time Johnson’s release with a sun dial… hilarity will ensue

even if that happens
they are already loaded with excuses … Romo was out, it was RWs first game in a new system, Adam Jones, blah blah blah …
Anyone love the fact that Favre told Romo to play. He’s probably like “really your finger dude, you are a pussy”

if they were smart, they would try to package some of these late round picks and try to move back up a bit

You guys know Roy is a good WR...
in this offense he’ll put up the big numbers and he’s going to take away touches from the secondary WR’s not the main guys…..2 WR’s and a TE is too many receivers now that you can’t spread the ball around???
