Tony Gonzalez to Eagles?

The rumors of a possible Tony Gonzalez deal have begun to swirl. This weekend, the future hall of famer has confirmed his desire to be traded
"The Chiefs have a three-year plan to make this team good," Gonzalez said late last night. "They are going young and at this point in my career, I want to play for a known contender — a team that has a chance to get to win the Super Bowl before my career ends. If it doesn't happen, of course I'll play my butt off at the same level I always have. But by the time their plan comes to fruition I'll be finishing up my career."
After the jump yophillybro has several sources discussing the subject from an Eagles perspective.

Eagles Interested In TE Gonzalez PDF Print E-mail
Written by Garry Cobb

The Eagles are reported to be amongst a group of teams who are interested in acquiring Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez.

The Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants have expressed interest in Gonzalez.

This is going to have Eagles tight end L.J. Smith, hyperventilating but the Eagles do need more production from the tight end position.

It's been reported by a number of outlets that Gonzalez has approached the Chiefs front office and requested a trade.

I don't know that anything is going to come of it but the Eagles do need some help at the tight end position.  Gonzalez is 32 years old.

The New York Giants are thought to be the team most interested because they haven't been getting anything out of their tight end this season.  They traded away tight end Jeremy Shockey before the season began.

The Chiefs have asked for a third round draft pick for the tight end.  It's been reported that the Giants said they're willing to part with a sixth round pick in order to acquire the services of Gonzalez.

Reid Says They're Talking About Moves PDF Print E-mail

Eagles head coach Andy Reid didn't say that they were interested in aquiring Tony Gonzalez but he left the door open.

Reid just completed his news conference and said the Eagles are looking into numerous possibilities right now.

There have been reports that the Eagles are amongst a group of teams interested in acquiring the future Hall Of Famer and current Kansas City Chiefs tight end Gonzalez.

The Chiefs are reported to be asking for a third round pick.  That Giants are said to have offered a sixth round pick.

The Eagles are at least 15 million under the cap so they have the money to sign Gonzalez.

CHIEFS WANT A THIRD-ROUNDER FOR GONZALEZ

Posted by Mike Florio on October 11, 2008, 10:41 p.m. EDT

We heard last night of a report out of Kansas City linking Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Giants.  We investigated the matter, and confirmed that, indeed, something is up.

Along with the Giants, the Bills, Eagles, and Packers are interested in the veteran Pro Bowler, who recently set the career receiving yardage record at his position.

The Chiefs reportedly want a third-round pick for Gonzalez.  The Giants reportedly have offered a sixth-rounder.

Frankly, we’re shocked that King Carl has set his asking price so low.  It’s a sign, in our view, of a genuine desire to get the deal done before the trading period expires at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.

The fairest approach would be to use a formula that determines the pick based on the performance of Gonzalez and/or of his new team in his new city.

Gonzalez’s base salary for 2008 is only $1 million.  In 2009, it spikes to $4 million.  In all, he’s signed through 2011.

It makes sense for the Chiefs to get whatever they can for Gonzalez, who at 32 likely won’t be a significant contributor to any resurgence that the Chiefs might ever enjoy.  Letting him chase a Super Bowl title with a contending team would also be a nice gesture of appreciation by a franchise for whom Gonzalez has done so much over the years.

everything is just too perfect to let this happen.
we have a surplus at TE so we could let 1 of them go so we have room
we have plety of picks next year
wehave the bye week so that gives Tony G 2 weeks to learn the system

however it does make me wonder if that isnt the move Andy Ried was talking about then what was it?

Gonzalez

We could give them Matt Schobel and a 4th Rounder and it would still be a great deal.

Lito?

We give up Lito and a 4th rounder for Tony and a second rounder. I’ll hang up and listen to your answer…

I say screw it

Give em the third round pick.
How often do 3rd round picks actually make it in the NFL.
Bryan Smith – inactive every game this year
Stewart Bradley – looks good
Tony Hunt – not so much
Chris Gocong – serviceable coming off the edge, liability in coverage
Ryan Moats – …
Matt Ware – …
Billy McMullen – …
Brian Westbrook – This one worked ok
more here (link)

Keep LJ and bring in Gonzalez – a third round pick for a future HOF player seems like a fair upgrade to me. Especially because it is an area of need for the birds.
Bring me Tony G!

anyone know what his contract looks like? i don’t care so much about money because we’ll chop LJ after this year… years though? I think he’s signed for one more

if we dont get Tony Gonzalez….please fire ANDY REID

If we cut LJ smith i dont even know who would want him… He runs terrible routes….hes never open….he stumbles over his own feet…
AND he got blown up and ran over yesterday allll day…if you think or say im wrong you dont watch the eagles….hes the worst TE in the NFC East by leaps and bounds….

DO not trade lito in this move for TONY G. we need as many corners as possible right now…..

MCNABB is the man

that is all

Give them the third … we can release Schobel … everyone is happy. We have 2 first rounders and a second rounder … why do we even need a third …

i agree with this completely
he could drastically improve our offense in the red zone
and I don’t know why Schoebel is even on the team

But its more likely Reid is referring to bringing in a kicker or two

Correct me if i'm wrong

but didn’t Celek line up in the backfield a couple of times too.
I’m positive I remember a play where he motioned into the backfield when Don was in the shotgun – I thought it would be a run, turned out to be a max protect look.
Why not try Brent out as our FB/3rd TE and move Klecko back to DT full time.

Bring in Tony. Bring in Tony. A third round pick is worth it. Bring in Tony.

I thought I saw that too … I’m a Celek supporter so anything that gets him on he field more I’m for. We need to use him more so people can see what he really has. oh and …………………………………….

Bring in Tony. Bring in Tony. A third round pick is worth it. Bring in Tony.

BGN FANTASY

THIS WOULD BE SO AWESOME TONY HASNT BEEN GIVING ME ANYTHING POINTS WISE. WITH THE EAGLES HE WOULD BE A INSTANT WEAPON FOR MCNABB

by USMCSLB on Oct 13, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

any means necessary! we need TG!

in the long run to me, 3rd round draft for the game’s best TE isn’t a lot considering our current TE situation. i’m not sure if LJ is bitter about being franchised or what, but he’s been playing like shit this entire season.
he’s had some HUGE drops that could’ve been the difference in 3 of our losses.

4th and 26!!!!

winners of the east this week - +1

thats awesome that the eagles are the only team that won a game this week in the east, we needed that -when i was at work today i told this guy how great it would be if the browns beat the giants, he said [the browns have as much of a chance of beating the giants as the eagles going to the playoffs this year] , ha ha ha careful what you wish for – go eagles

i was about to jump off of wachovia center but one of akers’ kicks smacked me right in the face and knocked me backwards…

This doesn’t seem like the Eagles’ MO, but I would be thrilled.

Time's yours, Andy.

by BrianS on Oct 14, 2008 8:51 AM EDT reply actions

Eagles better make it happen

We have 2 1st-round picks. Why would we not deal a 3rd rounder for Tony? If the Eagles want more draft picks, they can always flip their 1st round pick for a 2nd and 3rd round pick in the draft next year. They have to make a move for Tony.
