Brad Childress Snags Cleveland Browns Vacant OC Position
While the Eagles' current offensive coordinator appears to be staying put, his predecessor has found a new city to call home. Earlier this afternoon, the Cleveland Browns (a.k.a. Philadelphia: Midwest Branch) announced that they had hired Brad Childress as their new offensive coordinator. The move obviously stems from the relationship Childress has with Cleveland's current head coach, Pat Shurmur, who was the Eagles quarterbacks coach under Childress from 2002-2005.
While this move isn't big news to most Eagles fans, it does mean that one more offensive coordinator option is off the market. However, the Raiders have already announced their decision to hire Denver's Dennis Allen as their new head coach. The Colts have also found their new man in Chuck Pagano. This means that Marty Mornhinweg, who is essentially out of options at this point, will likely stay put in Philadelphia for another year, sparing the Eagles from going through yet another frustrating search for a new assistant coach.
Eagles Promote Patch, Add Rick Mueller To Front Office
The Eagles have filled out their front office staff in the wake of Ryan Grigson's departure to the Colts and have done with a mix of internal promotions and outside hires.
33 year old Anthony Patch has been promoted to Director of College Scouting. He's spent the last 10 years in the teams' college scouting department and was most recently Ryan Grigson's assistant. So he would seem to be a natural candidate to be promoted.
The team did go outside the organization to fill their Player Personnel Exec job with Rick Mueller, who has 15 years of NFL experience. He's worked in pro personnel and college scouting for both the Saints and Jaguars organizations. He's helped put together six playoff teams, three of which have advanced to the conference title game. He left the Saints in 2008 to become an executive in the UFL.
"We are very pleased to promote Anthony and add Rick to our scouting staff," said Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman. "Anthony has been one of our top talent evaluators during his tenure as a college scout, has great relationships throughout football and is an extremely hard worker. Rick brings a wealth of NFL experience while giving us a new and fresh set of eyes to evaluate incoming talent. They will both play a role in helping us prepare for this offseason of free agency and the draft."
Scouting The Philadelphia Eagles Scouts
After spending time around NFL scouts down at the Senior Bowl, there is one thing noticeably missing from the Eagles personnel department. Just what is that?

Rex Grossman kicked off the 2011 Redskins season with what many thought was an overly optimistic interview about an NFC East title, so it’s only fitting for him to close the 2011 Redskins season with another tremendous interview, filled with sunshine and puppies.

Iggles Blitz " Blog Archive " Eagles Draft Talk From Mobile
LB Audie Cole would be interesting. He’s 6’4, 248. I think we’d have to put him at MLB. He’s effective at jamming receivers on underneath routes and hugging up against them, but he’s not a guy you necessarily want in space vs a RB. Cole is a good pass rusher. He has some pop when he hits. Might be the kind of guy who would fit nicely in the Wide-9 because of his size and toughness. Eagles might think he’s not athletic enough to play for us. Mid-round type of guy.
Two Eagles On A Bad List...
Football Outsiders has released their "All Keeping Choppin' Wood" team for the 2011 NFL season, meant to "honor" players who, as they put it, display "a level of consistent awfulness that undermines the competitiveness of the team, yet, for one reason or another, is tolerated."
"Keep Choppin Wood" is a reference Jack Del Rio's ill fated experiment when he first took over as coach of the Jags.
The mantra, introduced by Del Rio during the 2003 season, was intended to indicate how the team would slowly whittle away the huge obstacles in front of them. Del Rio placed a wooden stump and axe in the Jaguars locker room as a symbol of his rallying cry.
After his teammates had been taking swings at the wood with the axe, Punter Chris Hanson followed suit and ended up seriously wounding his non-kicking foot. Hanson missed the remainder of the 2003 season.
Two Eagles made the list, one a player and one a coach. Casey Matthews, who they called "ridiculously overmatched" made the team at LB and Juan Castillo is the team's defensive coordinator.
Really, though, naming Castillo defensive coordinator because he wanted to coach defense is like naming Santonio Holmes an offensive captain because you want him to show more leadership. It may work out, but you are just asking for trouble.

Graphic Designer Wes Kull has created a site he calls "Gridiron League" which envisions an NFL that never changed looks-wise from the Lombardi era. He's got retro style versions of NFL NFL team logo. Here is his Eagles concept.
Mel Kiper Re-drafts The 2006 NFL Draft
ESPN's Mel Kiper has decided to re-do the 2006 NFL draft because presumably he had nothing better to do than to rehash a six year old draft. At this point, hindsight is crystal clear as to who worked out and who didn't. The Eagles held the 14th overall pick in that draft and took DT Brodrick Bunkley. In KIper's redraft, he has them taking Elvis Dumervil, DE, Louisville.
He's faced a major injury, and even then Dumervil is exactly a half-sack behind Mario Williams one behind Tamba Hali, and this after being taken No. 126 overall. Sure, he faced height questions, but Dumervil simply gets to quarterbacks. Previous draft spot: No. 126
Kiper has Haloti Ngata going #1 overall in his re-draft and Nick Mangold (not a joke) going #2.
Brent Celek A Passenger In DUI Crash
Brent Celek was a passenger in a car involved in a DUI crash last night in South Philadelphia. It happened near an off ramp close to the Linc actually. The driver reportedly lost control and hit a concrete barrier, then failed a field sobriety test. The driver was arrested and no one was hurt in the crash.
The important takeaway is that no one was hurt in the crash and while it is good that Celek wasn't driving the car, he really is equally responsible to be sure that no one else is driving a car drunk. I think that's a duty we all have if we get in a car with someone drunk.
Now, of course, we don't know the details really and sometimes it's not obvious... then again sometimes it is. Who knows? So far the Eagles have not commented.
